Northumbria |
'The Secret Kingdom' |
This ancient Kingdom, in which we were born and live, is rich in beauty and charm. The country can be bleak and sparsely populated but it has a magnetism all of it's own. There are beautiful stretches of some of the best coastal areas and large areas of heathland. It is abundant in castles, and other historic sites, including many of the best Roman sites in Europe. The castles of Northumbria are probably more numerous than any other singular similarly sized area elsewhere, and most of them can be visited. It is said that if you climb to the top of Brizlee Tower near Alnwick you can see seven castles. Some have been continuously inhabited since they were built 1,000 years ago, and contain breathtaking displays of historic interest. Alnwick Castle (say 'annik') has vast displays of armour and priceless paintings e.g. at least two Canalettos. It also houses the Regiment of Fusiliers Military Museum. |
