This
is how it is looking towards the end of January 2002. At this stage I
have given it a coat of varnish to help me to sand it to a finer finish.
I will now virtually sand all of the varnish away, to see exactly where
the imperfections are and fill and smooth to the best finish I can get,
before painting it in its correct colours. I have started organising the
masts and bowsprit and am about to start assembling the deck fittings. There is still a
very long way to go though!

I have now sanded the hull right back to the
wood - using a compressed-air sander, and am about to use filler to get
a good finish. It turned out better than I expected after the sanding. I
am using the lathe to turn out new masts as the ones supplied are
nothing like the plans. The decking has split so I will be replacing
that by individually planking it.
This
is the model after the first time of sanding using a sand-block, but it
wasn't man enough to do the job properly.
The
red thing is the air-sander which I used to strip all the varnish off,
and it worked very well. It is normally used for wet & dry sand
paper finishing on car bodies. It has a very soft cushion designed to take all the curves on a car and ideally suited for the model's hull.
