Landscapes

It is a popular misconception that North East England is all smokey chimneys, and spoil heaps with men in flat caps and women in hair - rollers. I hope in these pages (Landscapes, Northumbria & Newcastle) to shew what it is really like.

The River Tyne Valley looking South East from our dining room.

The River Tyne valley, looking South towards Clara Vale with Crawcrook and Greenside in the distance

From our lofty dwelling, we have magnificent panoramic views of the Tyne valley, and we can see below us 4 x 18-hole Golf courses and 3 Cricket pitches. The view is of a classical glacial valley, formed by the melting glaciers of the Ice Age.

These 2 pictures suffer a little, by being taken through the dining room window. But the view changes not only with the Seasons, but by the hour, being so high up, the Meteorological changes can be sudden and dramatic.

In the Pictures above, the River Tyne runs through the central band of trees, and to the right, this side of the river, is Close House Golf Club, which belongs to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, with Ryton GC on the opposite bank of the river. At the upper left quarter is Tynedale GC. and Prudhoe GC is just out of shot to the upper right.

We see the NATO planes regularly, following the River Tyne valley, on low - flying exercises. They are sometimes lower than us too. It is odd to see the helicopters which are used to check the power cables, coming up from the valley below, and apparently flying towards you.
