My Racing Cars

Part 3 "The Formula Threes"

Mitford Elden Holbay-Ford Mk 9 Formula 3  1973

I came ashore, for the '1st time' in 1968 and besides the family haulage business, I ran a team of one Prototype GT car (Costin Nathan Ford GT), one single-seater car, ( Lotus 51A Formula Ford) and two MINI Cooper 'S's, until I met up with Brian Hampsheir. I was wanting to replace my Lotus, with an Elden (which was the car to have at the time - Johnny Gerber the Brazilian driver had just won the 'Formula Ford World Championship' with his Falconer bodied Elden.Mk 8.)

At that time, almost all of Elden's considerable  production was destined for the Americas,  their labour force was fulltime working on their exports, and it was more than they could handle to run works racing teams. So I arranged a meeting with Brian and his brother Peter.

At this meeting, I agreed to buy an Elden Mk 10a Formula Ford, in parts, for our own assembly, and also agreed to take over something which they had started, in a very small way - their Formula 3 Works Team.

They had a Formula 3 chassis newly completed, (see above picture) which was under testing, with Mike Catlow as chief  constructor and driver. The car had two Holbay F3 engines one belonging to Design Formula, and the other belonging to Mike Catlow.

So I took over the running of this car and I got them to supply me with the parts for a second Formula 3 car which my Mitford Team put together. For the second chassis, I then bought another 2 new Holbay engines. Mike Catlow brought his own engine to our Team when he joined us. So we had two chassis and 4 engines. I later bought another Holbay engine from Stanley Matthews Racing, making 5 in all. We used Hewland gearboxes, of which we had 2 supplied with the cars, and we bought 2 more. As with any teams with serious intent, you carry enough spares to replace absolutely any amount of replacements which might be needed. - See 'Transporters'.
