The "Audacity" came
into the dry-dock next to the one in Great Yarmouth in which I was
standing by on the "Security". It was nice tto have a few more people
around as the "Audacity" had the full crew on board.
The captain of the
"Audacity" was Capt. Jack Walls, well known as an extrovert,
and great fun to have around. Before the first day was over he had moved
me and my family into his cabin , "You need to have full catering
facillities when your family are around," said he. Over
the next week or so we got on fine. Then the sailing day arrived for
them, and Jack came on board and said he had been talking to the
company, and he had asked them if I could replace his 1st Mate,
who wanted some leave. The company said I wasn't working for them any
more! He said "Yes he is, he is on the "Security". Their
reply was, "Oh that's where he is, we had forgotten we sent him
there. But if he wants to go we will promote him to 1st Mate, and he can
sail with you. So from being 3rd. Mate in June 1959 I was 1st Mate in
October 1959. I sailed as
1st Mate with Jack on the Audacity" until June 1960, carrying
Edible Vegetable Oils of all kinds around the UK and Continent of
Europe. It was tough work because the tank cleaning was to very high
standards, but we had a great time visiting some of the best ports, like
Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg etc., and we got much more time in port than
we would have done with mineral oils.
After some leave I was promoted
to Master of the m.v."Auspicity" in July 1960, but I did
return and spent time on the "Audacity" some time later.
