Phillies vs. Expos- September 27, 1980

If the Phils had the Expos on the ropes following the September 26th squeaker win, the Expos roared back in this game, taking it 4-3 over the Phillies and ace Steve Carlton. Carlton pitched decently (4 runs in 8 innings), but may have been well-suited for an earlier exit. He actually help a 2-1 lead early and it was 2-2 going into the seventh inning, but Carlton just ran out of gas and gave up a pair in the 7th and 8th innings. Warren Brusstar and Sparky Lyle pitched an inning each in the loss. Mike Schmidt (44) and Manny Trillo (7) both homered in a losing cause for the Phillies. The loss brough Montreal back to within a half-game of the Phils.

  • Phils' Record: 85-69
  • Place: 1st Place, ½ game ahead of Montreal.

From The World Champion Phillies and the Road to Victory:

The Comeback Kids' comeback on Saturday fell short as the Expos held on for a 4-3 win.

Mike Schmidt, Gary Carter and Manny Trillo homered in the first two innings to give the Phils a 2-1 lead. Single runs in the fourth and seventh put Montreal on top. Larry Parrish's single added a fourth in the eighth.

Greg Luzinski and Manny Trillo singled to start the Phillies ninth. Following two outs, Keith Moreland poked an RBI single to right field, sending Bowa to third. The Expos brough in veteran Woodie Fryman and he threw a slider past Lonnie Smith for a called third strike ending the game and pulling them to within one-half game of the first place Phillies.
