Phillies vs. St. Louis- August 6, 1980

Well, not much can be said for this game. The Phillies got their butts kicked all over the field by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Phils failed to execute any part of their game on this Wednesday evening. Starter Bob Walk got shellacked for eight runs on seven hits in just two-plus innings of work (he failed to record an out in the third before being replaced by Kevin Saucier). The Phils' relievers failed to stem the tide, as a parade of them (Saucier, Warren Brusstar and Dan Larson) gave up six more runs over the next five innings before Dickie Noles finally plugged the hole. Defensively, the Phils committed three errors on the day. Offensively, the Phillies could only manage three hits- all singles- off of Cardinals' pitcher Bob Sykes, who sported a 5.01 ERA coming into the game. To be fair, Sykes also shutout the Expos in his next start. Overall, the Phils played terribly, and it was a whitewashing by the Cardinals.

  • Phils' Record: 54-48
  • Place: 3rd Place, 4 games behind Montreal.
