The Phils' bats responded early today, knocking out former Phillie and former Cy Young winner Randy Jones without retiring a batter, scoring 7 runs in the first inning alone. The highlight of the inning was the two-run homer by Mike Schmidt. The Padres chipped away at the lead off of Dick Ruthven all day, but were never able to completely recover from the early runs. Lonnie Smith hit a double and stole a base, and the offense was led by Schmidt, Smith (a double and a stolen base), and Larry Bowa hit a triple against Padres' starter John D'Acquisto. For Ruthven, it was the sixth win of the season, and the rest of the season from this point Ruthven would win eleven more, being perhaps the best pitcher of the Phils' second half.
