Phillies vs. Houston- May 25, 1980

Dick Ruthven went eight strong innings as the Phils completed the sweep of the Houston Astros, 6-2. Ruthven gave up two runs, one earned, while picking up his fifth win of the season. The Phils were powered by home runs from Garry Maddox (his 2nd), Mike Schmidt (his 12th) and Greg Luzinski (also his 12th). At this point, the Bull was hitting .296 with his 12 homers and 26 RBI, and seemed to be fully recovered from the injuries and slumps that plagued his 1979 season. Unfortuantely, soon his season would begin to fall apart, and he ended up with only 19 home runs, 56 RBI and a .228 season batting average for 1980, his last season with the Phils. Schmidt at the time was hitting .299 with 12 homers and 31 RBI. Schmitty would continue on to win his first MVP award (.286, 48 HR, 121 RBI).

  • Phils' Record: 20-15
  • Place: 2nd, 1 game behind Pittsburgh.
