The Exorcism of Demons

PROLOGUE: REFLECTIONS
Lord SohRyu, high lord of all water-controlling Shikigmi, fearless warrior and learned avatar, former confidant and later sworn enemy of Kurikara-Oh, was unsettled. Uneasy, perhaps even worried. And worry was a most unseemly state for one possessed of the great power and dignity to which SohRyu could lay claim.
The source of his agitation was, once again, his master's young partner Kurosaki Hisoka, but this time it's cause lay at a different level; a personal level. While SohRyu had once seen Hisoka as a bringer of ill- winds and ill changes, the two had now resolved their issues, and he looked on the boy with affection, even as a son.
After the resolution of the difficulties with Kurikara, in which Hisoka had played a significant role, he had drawn the boy aside to speak with him again, and had come to a number of significant conclusions. The first was that he had underestimated Hisoka: he may have been headstrong, insecure, power-hungry and hostile, but he was possessed of a gratifying degree of maturity, the ability to recognize and desire to correct his mistakes. The second was that he was just a boy; dead just over a year, rejected by those who should have loved him unconditionally, and horribly scarred by a demon he still carried within him. It was a miracle he had not become some kind of monster himself. Even his desire for power stemmed from his insecurity and desire to be an equal to, and not a burden on, his partner. The final realization had been that Hisoka's world centred on, and revolved firmly around Tsuzuki, a development of which SohRyu whole-heartedly approved. Hisoka loved Tsuzuki to a degree of which he himself was not aware, but the progression of that relationship would be the best thing that had ever happened to either Shinigami.
Throughout the course of their discussion, Hisoka had been able to lay a number of his personal demons to rest, but there had been several - and one in particular - which SohRyu had not been willing to attempt to exorcise, believing it a task better left to Tsuzuki. The problem was, one of those demons was about to batter its way back into Hisoka's life, and SohRyu wasn't sure whether the bond between Tsuzuki and his young partner was yet strong enough for him to break through to Hisoka and help him exorcise his demon before it rose up to destroy him.
