The Bear
"Some days you eat the Bear,
some days the Bear eats you"
Stephen Stills
(Christopher's Song)

I hope you have a terrific day! On this day,
the day of the Bear's Feast,
Time has disappeared --
        everything is in slow motion
yet it all happens in a split-second.

Rearing up to his entire, immense 7 feet,
almost chanting his bone-chilling roar,
his claws came up
        long, curved, and deadly,
and raked a hold in my Soul.
His voracious mouth opened wide
exposing yellowed, jagged, fatal teeth
and he chomped w/ vigor,
        irrational hunger overwhelming,
yet he missed -- barely,
splitting the air.
As his face came closer
and closer to mine
I noticed the thick bubble of scars
scattered here and there
and wondered what manner of beasts
he had beaten before he came upon me.
As his huge paws reached out
to get that unrelenting hold,
I noticed his muscles
        flex and flow,
        anticipating his mind
        moving smooth before his
        body actually did,
muscles of liquid steel.
He was so magnificent in his Power,
what could I do but accept his embrace?
Only half thinking this a mistake
I inertly began the search
for a flaw somewhere,
a weakness I could manipulate,
but I was transfixed by the protection
of his armour of thick, but soft, fur
glistening as black as his eyes.
It was impenetrable
        but his eyes weren't --
As we came closer
I noticed the shade of pain.
I opened my arms to him,
and locked in the embrace of sure death,
we danced.
I gave him the tears of
understanding his survival
and as tho' he could feel
those tiny drops of empathy,
as tho' he knew how I usually
horde those watery gifts,
he lightened his grip
and stared in my eyes.
I let him see thru me,
into my heart I had hoped,
and there came a recognition,
an understanding between
similar souls.
Gazing back into the ebony pools of his life
we faded, blended,
saw each other as we have always been.
We sank into each others' lives
from ancient past to present,
we floated there awhile, feasting,
and when we were sated
I realized there had been a change,
a marked shift of perspective --
        I had become
        the Bear ...
