| Plants do not need to eat. They get their energy from the sun through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis begins inside the plants leaves where the green pigment called chlorophyll absorbs energy from the sun. This energy, water, and carbon dioxide combine to form oxygen and simple sugars. Experiments Plant Needs Help your students to see what happens when a plants needs are not being met. Place one plant under a box where it will get no sun, no water, and little air. Give a second plant the sun, water, and air it needs. Have the children check the plants each day and keep a class record of the differences the observe. How Does Water Get From The Roots To The Leaves? Half fill a clear plastic glass with water. Add a few drops of red food coloring to the water and stir. Cut one stalk of celery from a fresh bunch (leaves attached and healthy) and place it into the colored waters. Return after a few hours and have the children note any changes (the leaves will now be red). Break open the stalk and allow your students to touch and observe the vascular tubes. |
