Amphibians
Don't just search the waters edge. Tree frogs, toads, and salamanders can also be observed in the leaf litter on the forest floor. Pacific tree frogs are the most common tree frog in California. Look for their distinctive black eye stripe. Tree frogs can change their body color in a matter of minutes! Their eggs are laid in large masses encased in clear jelly. However, if you see ribbons of eggs in the vernal pool, they are likely to belong to a Western toad. Western toads are dusty gray with darker blotches.  Salamanders also lay their eggs in the vernal pool. After spending the dry season in dormancy under rocks or logs, salamanders begin to move over the land with the rains. They can be found hiding in damp areas as they move about seeking mates.
