When You're on the Move

Travel companies will usually offer you either free private housing, free shared housing, or a housing subsity. If you choose to take their housing you'll usually get an apartment that is furnished with the basics. Sometimes utilities, except cable and phone, are paid as well, check this out with your company. Most companies let you move in 2 days before your 1st shift, and move out 2 days after your last shift. If you require more time it can usually be arranged at cost to you. It's also usual to have to pay for a portion of your housing if you you are short on your scheduled shifts, ASK upfront!

When packing to go to your assignment, pack light. Some apartments are on the upper levels and carrying a heavy TV 6 or 8 times a year can get tiring. Consider how many plates and pots you need. Can you use paper plates? How many shoes can you really wear? Will you need a heavy coat? Can you get what you need at a garage sale when you arrive? I bought a computer desk for $5 at a yard sale in Albuquerque, at that price I didn't mind giving it away when I left. That said, make sure you pack things to make your new apartment feel like a home. One traveler I know was surprised and disappointed to find that her company didn't provide a vacuum. This will be your home for 3 months make it comfortable without packing up your whole household.

Just the Facts Ma'am (or Making a furnished apartment your own).

Your apartment will be furnished with the basics. Don't expect anything else unless you have corporate housing or have arranged extra with the housing department of your company. If you want anything extra you need to let them know up front. You might be surprised and have a washer and dryer, or a microwave, etc., in your apartment, but don't expect it to be there unless you've made previous arrangements. If you need a Queen sized bed, tell them. If you want a TV then arrange it (at an extra cost to you of course).

A basic furnished apartment can feel very barren and not at all 'homey' or comfy. You might want to bring some extra things to make your apartment into your home. I've heard lots of suggestions, please feel free to email me and suggest more. A few things that don't take up much room, but that you might like to bring along include, your favorite bedspread, comforter or quilt; big comfortable towels; pictures of family; posters; throw pillows; throw rugs; a colourful calendar; twinkle lights; place mats;

What did I forget? Please let me know.
