Strategies for  Learning
is a WebPage dedicated to those who want to learn and share skills on helping their children to acheive optimal learning  for life and throughout life.

In here you can find the following topics :

1. INTRODUCTION

Would you like your child to be able to read and write before three , fix 40-piece jig-saw puzzles before two and fix tangrams before three ? Which parent does not want ? Yes all the above can be done and much more if we were just put in more effort, zest and creativity into the process of stimulating our child's learning process.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED TO BRING UP A WELL DEVELOPED CHILD, READ ON OR E-MAIL TO ME at
samneo88@yahoo.co.uk FOR MORE DISCUSSIONS.

1.2 CHESS & SEMINAR
S

Myn and Lyn are also keen chess players. In May 00 they  played a simultaneous game with Anatoly Karpov, supergrandmaster and world chess champion where the champ took on 40 national junior training squad chess players at the same time
.
Chess is good for training  of the mind
.

My family also attends interesting seminars together . For example in Feb 00,  we attended a talk  by the 1996 Physics Nobel Prize Winner, Prof D Osheroff , on Superfluidity  in Helium-3
.

1.3 PUBLISHED ARTICLE
S

Myn and Lyn have also had their essays published and  written an article in the following publications such as
:

(i) Article in Mensa Newsletter (1999, Myn and Lyn
)

There is also a link to a talk given by me to Physics major on
Career in Physics.

2. The Five Senses  and Multiple Intelligences

We all learn through our five senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste but the bulk of learning is through sight and hearing. To learn well we must be able to harness these faculties, especially that of sight for maximum learning capacity and capability.

There are different intelligences and each person has varying degree of the following types :

- Visual-spatial (based on sight and right brain and  needed for early learning where pattern recognition skill is key)
- Verbal-linguistic (based on hearing and left brain for learning of speech and language)
- Mathemaitcal-logical (very much left brain and analytical faculty)
- Kinesthetics (ability for physical acitivites such as sports)
- Naturalist (natural flair with nature - plants and animals etc.)
- Musical-rhythmic (talent for music)
- Interpersonal (necessary for relating with people ; some call it EQ)
- Intrapersonal  (personal management skill to deal and cope with uncertainties and problems  in life)

Parents would do well to help their children develop all these areas to at least a certain level of proficiency in order to live  life to the fullest.

3. Developmental Milestone
s

The following are developmental milestones  grouped by age which parents can use as  guide to plan their learning programme for their children.

6. 3 to 4 year

7. 4 to 5 year

9. 10 to 12 years

10. 12 years and above

11. Appendixes

 11.1  Memory skills

A good memory is necessary for effective learning. I f much of what is learnt is not remembered and cannot be recalled readily, then the knowledge management  process is not as good as someone with a better memory.

11.1.1   Maps

Techniques such as Mind Maps or Concept Maps are very  powerful ways to enhance knowledge acquistion, organisation, reacall, uaage and generation. The right brain faculty , which is much under-utilised, is used extensively in such techniques.

11.1.2   Memory Route

 11.1.3  Image Streaming

    11.2  Reading skills
    11.3  Questioning  skills
    11.4 Mathematical skills
    11.5 Drawing skills
    11.6 Visualisation skills
    11.7 Problem solving skills
    11.8 Creating skills
11.9 Llife skills and Responsibility skills

Drawing is a good form of relaxation and training of brain-hand coordination, spatial intelligence and discipline.   This skill is best developed from 2 years old onwards
