Became the fitrst US military casualty from hostile fire in Afghanistan.  He apparently was killed by small arms fire in an ambush near the city of Kost on Jan  4, 2002.  Nathan and a CIA officer met with local tribal leaders in Afghanistans  Pakita Province where earlier US war planes  struck Al-Qaida and Taliban  forces for weeks.

He was one of six soldiers killed during a firefight on March 3, 2002 while attempting to recover the body of another US soldier whom had fallen from his aircraft after being shot with  Rocket propelled Grenades.  This had been during a intense assault on suspected Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.
