- How can I get the best price for a new car?
- Everyone wants to brag that they got the best price when they bought their car. Some folks will even lie to their friends about how much they paid and subtract several hundred from the actual purchase amount. Such is human nature. Even so, I've had countless clients tell me that they hate negotiating and just want a bottomline price right at the start. Unfortunately, when they get what they're asking for they start to haggle anyway.
No matter how good of a price you finally settle upon with your salesperson, if it doesn't include a profit you won't be driving that car home. So you ask, "Why do managers allow their sales reps to write deals at way below dealer cost?" They are counting on you being so dazzled by the low price that you will be vulnerable to the manipulation of the dealership's Business Manager (sometimes called the Vehicle Director or F & I Manager.) He is a master of deception and will easily maneuver you into providing a profit for the store. I've seen these guys transform a deal that was a $3,000 loss, into a $3,000 profit. Yes, that means he picked up $6,000 from that customer who thought he was so sharp. Granted, the magnitude of this example is extraordinary but I've seen it take place several times a month, every month, at the dealerships where I've worked.
So, what can the average person do to avoid being ripped off? First, recognize that the dealership deserves a small profit in order to stay in business. Second, use a buying service like the ones I've listed below. Their job is to either provide you with, or help you to obtain, the lowest price the dealership will accept for the car you want to buy. The key here is that there will be no haggling, no hassles, and no tricks. If you don't mind paying a fair price from the beginning, which will ultimately turn out to be a lower total than you'd spend the old fashioned way, then this is the way for you to go. If you figure out the dollar value of your time, you'll realize that the saved hours alone are worth several hundred dollars.
