Luzian Border Collies: The Old Veterans

Dot getting first place at trial

R Lazy S Dot UD

Dot was one of my foundation bitches; she was a good choice because of her biddable temperament, her herding ability and her physical soundness. The "UD" in her name stands for "Utility Dog," the highest of AKC's obedience trial titles. Dot was from Jack Knox's imported Dryden Craig and the English Sadghyl line, which is where the blue merle coloration came from. Dottie enjoyed every minute of her life and was always interested in everything that was going on. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and passed on her strong spirit, sweet nature and optimistic attitude to her pups. She is much missed.

Merlin and Tessa

OTCh Luzian Merlin's Magic UD TD(October 20,1985-May 1,1999) My Best Friend and Luzian Enchantress UD(October 20,1985-August 8,1999)

Merlin, left, and Tessa are littermates from Dot's first litter, sired by Otch Ten Speed UD. Merlin is a real star -- he's an Obedience Trial Champion (the "OTCh"), which is as high an achievement as AKC offers, and he has a tracking title (the "TD"). Tessa is a mere Utility Dog! Merlin's blue eyes always attract a crowd; Tessa has one blue and one brown eye. Blue and "odd" eyes like this are more common than not in blue merle border collies.

Merlin and Tessa in brace classIn this little picture, Merlin and Tessa are competing in a brace obedience class, where each dog has to do exactly the same thing at the same time as the other. They have to be good friends!

Dan herding

Luzian Dapper Dan UDX NA

Although Dan is also Dot's son, he inherited his father's coloring. He's tri-colored, black and white with tan patches. Dan is now a UDX, which is Utility Dog Excellent, one step above Utility Dog. The "NA" after his name means he has a Novice title in Agility. As you can tell from the picture, Dan is my "main man" around my sheep farm, and herding is what he loves to do most.Dan has a Junior Herding Title from AHBA

Sophie looking cock-eyed

Luzian Sophie CDX NA

Sophie is a character! She can be serious when she wants to be -- witness her Companion Dog Excellent title (second-highest AKC obedience title) and her NA. But her sense of humor is hard to ignore. Sophie is always making up funny little games for her own amusement, and is everyone's friend, dog or human but she sure can tell sheep what to do. She's always the pups' favorite aunt. She's a thoroughly nice guy!

Lyric proud and poised

O'Brae Lyric CDX TD HS

Lyric is that rarest of all creatures -- a laid-back border collie! She's quiet, strong (OK, stubborn!), and smart as they come. Her attitude toward life in general and herding in particular is work-a-day. She's the perfect general farm dog. She doesn't get excited and is predictable and consistent. Not real exciting, maybe, but she always gets the job done. Strangely enough, her pups are pure flash! Must come from their sires! By the way, Lyric is a gorgeous red tri with white dog.

Luzian Mist AX,AXJ,CDX,AHBA HTD1 OFA GOOD Eyes Clear

Mist, born on October 3, 1992 and went to the rainbow bridge in Feb, 2004, has a Companion Dog Excellent title, the second AKC obedience title. She also does agility and herding. Mist has one of the sweetest temperaments of any of my dogs. She is also a little bitty thing, at 30 pounds. Mist loved life to the very end. She qualified in Ex B JWW the week before she passed away. She became weak and disoriented and upon an autopsy was found to have a benign nasel sinus tumor which had grown into the brain. There wer eno signs or symptoms until her last week.Dearly missed......until we meet again.

Mist obtains her CDX with a second place and a 196 1/2 from Open B
