The 'Three' Types
The pneumatic or spiritual human recognizes the truth instinctively and responds, while the hylic or material type rejects it utterly because they hate what they don't understand. Between these two extremes lies the psychic or soulful type who struggles to define reality. These are the three basic types of person of Gnostic thought; though most people will be a mix of different stages as their soul graduates through the levels. Graduation can take place in one lifetime though it is obviously more difficult for a new soul to learn the lessons of life as quickly as a veteran one.
Hylic is derived from the Greek hyle, meaning unconscious matter. A more accurate term for Hylics would be materialists or people of the flesh. They associate themselves very much with the body, believing that there is nothing beyond the five biological senses. They are dominated by the 'ego' and tend to carry out their lives ignorant of soul. To all intents and purposes they are spiritually dead. The ‘hylics’ are steeped in love of self. They make up the largest group of human beings because they continuously return to material life, having failed to achieve 'gnosis'. They may have beliefs or insights but they tend to use them for their own gain. They are recognizable for their lack of depth, and often 'feel' empty as their souls are trapped deep within a material prison unused and unloved. They form protective circles with their own kind and try to block psychics and pneumatics due to destructive competitiveness brought on by their lack of intuition. The more they do this, the more they limit their potential to grow and be helped out of their self regulated prison. There can be powerful Hylics but they tend to miss the point on just about everything, relying on connect-the-dot process and uncompetitive practice to dominate. Hylics are not necessarily bad- misguided is more appropriate. It is their inability to see beyond their own needs and step outside the limited box of material existence which ensures their eventual misery. Help is available, but they tend to shoot the messenger as they hate anything which makes them face the truth.
The Psychics, are identified with the mind (psyche) or personality. These are the type of people who require clearly defined boundaries to work within. People who struggle with their conscience, karma, ethics, etc. They are by nature restless, possessing insight and spiritual sensitivity. They often live an early life of mental or physical struggle which will force them to face their greater insight and define whether they reach the next stage or fall into a material life they can dominate at the expense of their soul. They have a noticeable presence but can often swing between 'feeling' powerful and 'feeling' weak. This is down to their endless battle with the leftovers from their Hylic days of self gratification and material obsession. Many Psychics can obtain knowledge but if the don't achieve their goals or give in to materialism, they- being painfully aware of their prison walls- can fall into a life destructive to themselves and others. Theirs is often the most difficult existence, caught in a half-way world between material fact and spiritual knowledge; but it is also potentially very rewarding as they can do a great deal of good. Many Bible thumpers and dogmatists are Psychics; members of the group who have become obsessed with process and their ability to master it rather than use their higher functions to guide others to realization. The Psychic stage is about exploring all the aspects of ourselves, both light and dark, and integrating them into one complete whole for transition.
The Pneumatics, or final stage souls are the spiritual ones, aware of the pure consciousness aspect of themselves. The term Pneumatics is derived from the Greek, pneuma, meaning spirit, or consciousness. These are the 'wow' people with a presence which can't be missed when they walk into a room. Often they have perceptions which seem to come out of nowhere. The primary purpose of their life is to lessen identification with the ego, that part of us that tries to sabotage our growth. They will live a life at war with their material self, taking on rather than avoiding a battle with their worst aspects. For a Pneumatic facing demons is the only way to ensure transition from the material universe back to the source. Thus they take on their own dark sides and try to lance out the worst aspects of others. This is a process aimed at becoming worthy of transition from a material world they are painfully aware of as being alien to their own soul. Failure in this mission for the Pneumatic is literally a fate worse than death so they must never give up. Like the Psychic they are aware they are not alone, but their awareness is much more conscious. Unlike a five sensory person they do not need to learn primarily through physical experiences. They have an instinctual knowledge and ability which has nothing to do with events crammed into this life. A Hylic or 'novice' Psychic still learns through the slow process of physical matter. A Psychic close to transition or a Pneumatic learns almost instantly. All that is known is already known and by coming into contact with the wisdom or insights of others the Pneumatic will rapidly access the truth on the subject.
