"...matter came into being out of shadow, and was projected apart.  And it did not depart from chaos; rather, matter was in chaos, being in a part of it."
Passage from 'The Untitled Text', Nag Hammadi Scriptures 4th Century CE, rediscovered 1945.

What is Gnosticism?

Gnosis is Greek for knowledge.

Gnosticism is one of the oldest concept systems in the world based on metaphorical myths that do not conflict with modern understanding.

Gnostics have much in common with followers of Eastern beliefs and share with Hindus the notion that the soul is a 'devine spark'  while the body is material matter.

Gnosticism teaches truth lies within, not with external dogma.

Gnostics say women had a special role in awakening men to knowledge.

Much of their message has been re-discovered in the past half century through books, film and 'The Nag Hammadi Scriptures'.

Those scriptures include older versions of familiar Bible stories;  before they were edited to encourage servitude through blind faith and a lower status for women.

"If you can accept a God who coexists with death camps,  schizophrenia and AIDS, yet remains all-powerful  and somehow benign, then you have faith.....If you know yourself as having an affinity with the alien or stranger God, cut off from this world, then  you are a Gnostic...and perhaps what is best and oldest in you long  precedes this creation."
Harold Bloom, Author 'Omens of the Millennium'.
