Animal Magic
I have a great love of animals, of all kinds. I feel an attachment to them, that I don't always feel with humans. We all have special animals in our lives, that we regard as ours. But they are not our possessions, they are with us because they have chosen to be.
Animal magic is a part of our lives weather we know it or not. People often say that they are cat people or horse people or bird people. We have a habit of staying with the same animals, choosing them over and over again. Staying with what we find comfortable. There are two ways we can have animal familiars in our lives, one is consciously and the other is subconsciously. We may chose consciously to attract a familiar, or we may subconsciously chose them.
The animals protect us and often warn us of dangers, that may harm us. They feel that we belong to them, and they need to watch over us. They are powerful in their own way. As well as protecting, they aid us in prophecy, healing, helping us with our desires, and spiritual enlightenment. They are strong and loyal companions.
When we love and provide for our animals they return that love and loyalty ten fold. By understanding that we are not the only intelligent force on this world, we must accept that we are all children of the God/dess's. They may not react, think or behave as we do, but that does not make them any less important in the eyes of our Lord and Lady. To grow spiritually we must acknowledge their right to exist in their own way, loved by the God/desses.
Most of us have secret wants, to interact with wild dangerous animals, which could be dangerous to us physically. But the draw of the raw wild energy is strong, so we meditate and meet with the animals of our desires in safe places. They grace us with their uniqueness, and beauty, and can teach us things about ourselves if we just listen and observe. When we meet with them through meditation, they can bring us messages we need to hear. They do us no harm, and can symbolize traits we need to control or add to our lives.
There are four types of familiars
The first type is a physical creature who lives with us as "pets" and have a bond with humans. The ones that are true familiars establish connections with the human they choose. They communicate their needs without speaking, using telepathy.
The second type is an astral creature which attaches itself to a human in order to aid them. This type maybe attracted by an intense liking of a specific type that he can not have in his life. The familiar maybe in your life because of a specific need. Deceased pets may come back as this type. Astral friendships are also wonderful experiences. Amazing things happen when we make the effort to cross over the barriers and open our hearts to all of our Mother's creations. When we open our hearts to the beauty of "alien" animals, we expand our views. When we expand our views, we grow spiritually, and that is what we strive for.
The third type is elemental spirits. These are mainly for ceremonial magicians and witches often to inhabit an object. The genie of the lamp falls into this category. Paracelsus had a familiar which inhabited a large stone in the pommel of his ritual sword.
The fourth type is a discarnate human or spirit of someone who died. Although few will call human spirits against their will, we do not like to be ordered around when we are alive, why should we when we are dead. They can be troublesome, and when it comes to getting rid of them, it can be more difficult than the original calling. Spirits who come willing, usually take the place of a astral teacher or guide.
If you work magic, your familiar either physical or astral can aid you by augmenting your powers. Some do this by being with you during a ritual or spell. You have to always consider freedom of will of your familiar. Physical familiars often are not in the mood, and can't be coerced. They come and go, help or may not, during a ritual or spell, according to their own whims. You should always feel honored if your familiar enters your working space, and gently assists, by sending energy.
