The happenings at Fatima are the most remarkable of the past 100 years. The extraordinary events have been easily documented because they are so close to us in time. There were apparitions of the Immaculate Queen of Heaven, the Mother of God. She promised a sign to show the world that the messages given to the seers were from Heaven. Seventy thousand people witnessed the phenomenon of the 'dancing sun' and were victims of drenching rain that instantly dried from their clothes when the event ended. The most unbelievable part of the whole miraculous drama, which was reported worldwide in all forms of media, is that so few people have even heard of Fatima. One would think the world would either be trying to comply with the messages or trying to logically explain the results, results that even a hostile press reported. Reports were ringing out with the same accounts. Observation after observation began to add up to the truth of the matter. The apparitions at Fatima were from Heaven; and the sign given on October 13, 1917 proved it.
Fatima, Portugal is a small town north of Lisbon. In 1917, the Immaculate Queen, Mother of God, appeared to three guileless shepherd children who lived there. One of those children grew up and is still living in Portugal today. It is from her writings that this story is researched. Her memoirs are published in English in the book titled, Fatima in Lucia's Own Words.
Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco were responsible for taking care of sheep. The three children were happy to care for the flocks and played together each day while the sheep grazed. Imagine the scene as viewed from Heaven. The United States had just declared war on Germany, the government in Portugal had promised to abolish religion in two generations. Now the three children, who were surrounded by the fresh Portuguese springtime and an innocence that seems far removed from typical adult life, followed their usual practice of praying the rosary after their lunch. Any wonder that Heaven's attention was directed toward them?
Providence determined to give people of our own time a message of prayer, penance, and sacrifice to save souls. Much like the message to Noah, much like the message to Ninive, much like the messages at Lourdes; people are being warned -return to God or die. Not only a threat, but a promise of tribulations that may be avoided if prayers are said, penance is embraced, and sacrifice is practiced.
The Immaculate Queen appeared to the little shepherds during the year of 1917. She asked them to return to the same pasture on the same day throughout the following six months. During those months she revealed to them the way to save souls from Hell and a way to avoid the tribulations of the Last Days. She promised a miracle for the world to see so that all would know the messages she brought to the children were from Heaven. The miracle was a topic that was broadcast by news media and by eyewitnesses. Some people who were believers, some people who were agnostic, some who were priests spread details of the event. Some of the eyewitnesses were not even at Fatima on October 13,1917. Twenty-five miles away the poet Alfonso Lopes Vieira and his family saw the miracle of the sun.
