Gun Licensing In Australia
While the laws in the ACT vary to those in other states, this should give you the basic idea about how to go about getting a gun in Australia.
STEP 1. SAFETY CERTIFICATE
First of all you have to go to your local friendly gun dealer and see about getting a Safety Certificate. Generally you buy a booklet from them ($82), then read up on all the handy info. Next, head back there to do the test (Here the gun store offers the test on a Tuesday night). Once you've got that nice piece of paper...
STEP 2. GET SHOOTERS LICENSE
...take it to your local friendy Police Station. Fill in the appropriate forms, let them look at your Safety Certificate and 30 days later (assuming you haven't been convicted of mass murder or armed robery) you should get your license. STEP 3. CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON

STEP 4. GET YOUR GUN LICENSE
Once again treck down to the Cop Shop and this time fill out the forms to buy your gun. Same deal as last time, 30 days later they should give you a nice piece of paper which will allow you to...
STEP 5. BUY GUN
...buy your gun from the dealer.
So, as you can see it takes about 3 months in total for you to get a gun in these parts. The types of weapons one can get are also fairly restricted. Handguns are banned, except for sports shooter in shich case you have to be a member of a shooting club and the gun is kept at said club. Pump-action shotguns and rifles are all banned. Rifles and shotguns are allowed a 2 shot maximum prior to re-loading.
