| Criminals who commit home invasion robberies are confident they have two advantages over their intended victims: shock and planning. Outside and Doorway preparation can minimize the first advantage. The second advantage can be minimized by planning specific actions you and your family will take should an attack occur. First, be aware of your surroundings. Cautiously follow up on any unusual sounds or behaviors you notice around your house. Never open an entry door before you are satisfied it is safe to do so. If you cannot verify who is at the door using the viewer or a window, call out to them to identify themselves. If they cannot satisfy you of their safe intent tell them to leave. Call a neighbor or the police. Be attuned to unfamiliar sounds and pet behavior which might indicate an intruder outside your home. Perhaps a motion detector light comes on or a pet acts in stressed manner. This is not the time to panic, but check it out. someone might be casing the perimeter.
