Your safe room should be located in a bedroom on the ground floor and should have no exterior door. This will minimize the likelyhood it would become the point of entry. The room door should be of solid wood or steel and should include the same hardware upgrades as the exterior doors. one window (facing the side if possible) should be designated as an escape route with an easily removed lock and screen. The safe room should be in regular use so that it will not become a cluttered storage room. It could also act as a refuge during storms and other potential disasters.
Included in this room should be a dedicated mobile phone in a charger. This will prevent interruption of phone service from outside.
Also install a small digital safe to lock your weapon of choice (ie handgun, tazer, mace etc).
I believe that if the intruders are confronted with a reinforced entry door and an alarm they will retreat from the attack, and if they find a second reinforced door they will be discouraged from continueing. However, you must prepare for a final defense if they do continue. Decide in advance whether to flee or fight. whichever you choose follow through completely if the need arises. Remember that the perpitrators will use violence to gain control. Be prepaired to respond accordingly.
