Geology started at the RGS in two forms, however neither of them were totally academic. There was a short course as part of a general studies course, and a extra-curricular activity for Monday afternoons. These were both run by Dave Turner . However, in September 1996, an AS level in Geology was offered to the new sixth form that year. The course soon got a reputation amongst the rest of the school, not least for trips to Wales and France plus of course, Dave Turner's unique brand of social life which is added to the subject. What Geology was on offer then? Well, what was offered by the geology department? If you wanted to persue Geology seriously or just academic
interest then you chose to do the AS Geology Course. If you were just interested in Fossil Collecting and don't have
any aspirations to seriously study Geology then you may have chosed the Period-8 Fossil Collecting Group. AS Geology - London Examinations Course An AS is basically half an A-Level. It doesn't mean half the difficulty, but you only do two modules and one assessed
field work exercise. This course builds up a basic understanding of the earth and rocks, looking at basic mineral
work, igneous rocks, surface processes, sedimentary rocks. map work and human activities amongst others. The
course uses field courses to places of interest, plus I.T. to help build up understanding of the subject. Period-8 Fossil Collecting - Monday Afternoons and Field Days This was done instead of the CCF, Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme etc. during Monday Period 8 and Field Days. This activity offered field trips to localities were the major types of fossil can be found and a more social approach to field work. |
