Further developments in the ACT government's trend towards gay and lesbian law reform. The Legislative Assembly will be debating the introduction of two new bills relating to anti-vilification and discrimination based on sexuality, and recognising same sex parents - a HUGE step forward.
Fingers crossed these will pass, making it a very happy New Year for a lot of families as they welcome in 2004 with the legal protection they deserve.

Good news for GLBTI people in the ACT - the ACT government has recently released a report advocating their support for removing all discrimination in legislation currently in place. This includes allowing same sex couples to adopt children, particularly recognising the non-biological parent and allowing them to adopt their child legally. There will also be moves to remove the 'gay panic' defence which in the ACT allows a murder charge to be reduced to manslaughter when the victim is murdered for making a non-violent homosexual advance. This will be a first in Australia.

That said however, the work of various MLAs has also been instrumental in securing these much needed changes and the support of the ACT community.
