From the FOOD REVOLUTION consumption of dairy products vs rates of osteoporosis...wasted calcium...who will pay? you will. Here's a quick recipe from Dr. Atkins: BARBECUE SAUCE. Commercial BBQ sauces run between 5 and 14 grams carbohydrate per tablespoon. this one has only 2 grams per tablespoon (8 per 1/4 cup). Mix together 2 tablestpoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon Dijon must., 1 tablespoon minces shallot, 2 pressed garlic cloves. TAbasco sauce to taste, 1/4 fullbodied red wine, a daxh of liquid mesquite smoke (if avial.), and a small pinch of Equal or substitute. Yum. comment: This is a good recipe, though, as it cuts out unwanted carbs. Be aware that certain carbs might be more undesirable, such as those in ketchup and barbecue sauce, for instance, while mustard might be delicious just the way it is.

Soy, bean, provides essential fatty acids...claims to be a higher quality of fat. phytoestrogens lower both heart disease and cancer risk... a word on Arachidonic Acid (AA): AA is found in all meats, expecially red meats an dorgan meats, and in egg yolks (editor: I get quite a bit of organ meats and egg; don't make the mistake of needlessly kicking these out). It probably hasn't escaped you notice that these foods are the same ones that most people identify as bieng loaded with fat and cholesterol. Despite popular opinion, though, it's not the saturated fat and cholesterol that cause most of the problems associated with bad eating habits. It's eating too much of the wrong kinds of foods.

Dr. Williams is a strong believer in the psychology of things; So, here's an outline of her belief system:
from a TIME article: Youth offers no protection against the health of the health risks of the cigarette.; Smokers under 40 are five times as likely to have a heart attack as those not smoking, according to a study of 21 countries.; Smoking in this age group was judged to be the cause of 65% of nonfatal heart attacks in men and 55% in women.
Once your 'bad mood' is busted, we proceed to the following four stages: Conceptualization- our thoughts gain 'critical mass' Visualization- internal images, perception, self talk Emotionalization- physical embodiment of ideas finally Actualization...
my thoughts: nicotine can be a 'buster' of sorts; hunger, bad mood, insomnia, and so one must find the sympton underlying the effect to give those cigarettes the 1-2 punch. Furthermore, if you enjoy the effects of another kind of cigarette, the 'joint', you must also learn to give up this kind of ingestion.; Why? because smoke in the lungs is a very bad idea to begin with. I fell terribly ill last winter smoking 5 or 10 joints a day, and have now come back to a non-smoking viewpoint. The solution is to add the same amount to a piece of hot pizza, or cook it in oil, and then ingest. Same, or better! effect, and no hot smoke where your air belongs. Enjoy!
CARBOHYDRATES: WHAT ARE THEY?
When I met him in 1974, I was a registered nurse in search of a new job, and he was interviewing for a staff nurse. The publication two years earlier of Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution had sent his practice into expansion overdrive. My job interview went smoothly enough, but I knew there was one subject we had skirted, and characteristically, Dr. Atkins brought it up. “What do you think of my eating plan?” he asked. I struggled for diplomacy, but wound up telling him in the bluntest way that I didn’t believe in it. Absorbing that for a second or so, he leaned across the table—as far as I could tell, quite unfazed—and asked, “Can you start on Monday?” My answer of “yes,” as well as the subsequent alterations in my preconceived notions, landed me on a roller-coaster ride of innovation. By the end of the 1970s, Dr. Atkins was expanding the scope of his practice beyond controlled-carb nutrition to include natural remedies such as vitamin and mineral supplementation and address disorders as diverse as arthritis, colitis, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Why? fewer carbs per calorie! Is that good? well, when you need calories, with bread you also fill up on carbs. But WE in the consumer world have so many carbs, in sugars for instance, that WE DON'T NEED as many as bread provides. Think! when i used a calculator to calculate price/content ratio of milk thistle extract at the nature store, I was the "Star of the Week"...all because I could divide... |

My experience with the Atkins philosophy:
The other day I noticed that I was putting on some weight in the buttocks and around my waist. So I began various consults, and I figured out that I was eating wrong. Previously, I believed that due to my constant activity level- I am presently homeless, and therefore have no couch, no living room, and I must walk all over the Berkeley downtown area to find 'spare change'-everyday-that I thought whatever I put into the stomach is A OK! RIGHT? wrong.

So I found a cup good books, one on 'the protein diet' and the other 'Dr Atkins' program' and began to follow his recommendation. A week later, after basically not eating bread and, instead of purchasing a muffin or a piece of pizza, buying some cold cuts, I had visibly reduced the size of my butt and was much trimmer around the waist. But don't you get hungry? Yes, but he recommends eating protein and more protein.
IT MIGHT SEEM COMPLICATED TO THOSE OF YOU WHO BELIEVE THAT BREAD IS THE NEXT BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD,NOTICE NOTICE :After a few weeks of not following the diet, I gained weight like a madman! I now recommend you NOT to follow the Atkins diet! You will hide fat in your blood, and, soon you will produce artherosclerosis. I gained about 5 pounds as soon as I quit it, and it took a 40 day ramadan to bring my body back to shape. Now, I eat a healthy diet and exercise in a much more educated manner. Beware! You might shed pounds, but I'm letting you know that it's a false sense of regaining your shape since all you do is modify the kinds of lipids your body stores !

NOTICE ! nOTICe ! Do not follow the Atkins Diet. Below is some material I wrote BEFORE discovering its side-effects!
So,then, how do we decide what to eat and what to avoid? My best answer is the following: Stay active, inform yourself with as many materials as possible, and select a diet appropriate for your activity. But, suggestion: Never, or rarely, avoid ONE food group altogether. All play a part in the health of the body. However, if you're lifting heavy weights, like I am, you WILL need extra protein so I DO add some protein supplement to my 'triple burner'!
Sometimes, you might make mistakes, but the best path is one of learning and enlightenment.
