Welcome to kindergarten at Curtis Fundamental Elementary! I am very excited about this school year and would like to start off by telling you a little bit about myself. My name is Cristi Bakewell and this is my 21st year of teaching. I earned both my Bachelors and Masters degree from USF (Go Bulls!)specializing in early literacy instruction. In December of 2007 I became a Nationally Certified Teacher. I have taught children in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade, spending most of my years with the little ones. When not teaching, I enjoy traveling, scrapbooking, cooking, and spending time with my family. During football season, I of course cheer for our Buccaneers, and during baseball season I try to root for the Devil Rays, although I’m an Atlanta Braves fan at heart!

Beginning on Monday, August 25, children will take home a weekly kindergarten newsletter. This newsletter will come home every Monday (or the first school day of the week) in your child's teddy bear envelope. It will inform you of the skills we are covering for the week, important events, and the special Thursday night homework. If you do not receive a newsletter, please notify me the following day so I can send one to you as soon as possible. Please help your child to be responsible for his/her envelope. Do not put it in their backpack as it is too big and may get torn. If the envelope should need repairing, please do so at home. Children will receive a new communication envelope in January.

Starting on Monday, August 25th, your child will have homework. On Monday through Wednesday the homework is a response to literature. Thursday's homework is a special assignment that will be explained in the weekly newsletter. Please remember that all homework must be signed. We will discuss the homework and show good examples during the Thursday night orientation.

On your child’s special day, a treat will be provided by our PTA. He or she will also take home the “birthday suitcase.” Inside your child will find some birthday books to listen to as well as a booklet in which your child can tell us a little about his or her birthday.

Special Dates

Wednesday, August 20...First day of school. Please make sure the nametag you received at orientation is filled out completely and your child wears it to school. Thursday, August 21...Open House for parents (please arrange for childcare for your little one). This is your first mandatory PTA meeting. Please be at school promptly at 6:30pm. Candy and toys should be left at home. Should we need a special item, a note will be sent home. He was sick with the flu.).
