| Q: Why does the Easter Bunny carry eggs? Rabbits don't lay eggs. | ||||
| A: Luckily for me this question ties in neatly with a favourite rant topic of mine; christians who talk about the "true" meaning of easter/christmas. It should be quite apparent to anyone with even a limited understanding of symbolism that the christian meaning of easter (involving the resurrection of jesus) is based on the pagan's Spring Equinox which celibrates the earth coming back to life after winter. So the question should be "Why does the Spring Equinox Bunny carry eggs?" Eggs are another clear symbol of the rebirth of the land and of course rabbits being the prolific breeders that they are are also abundant in spring so thats where the Spring Equinox Bunny comes into the pagan symbolism. Later people just lumped the bunny in with the eggs and then they were both commandeered by the christian faith and sent to work as symbols of Easter. |
