My Four Wheel Driving Adventures
When I sold the Formula Vee at the end of the racing season in 1976 Judy & I decided to buy one of the new Suzuki mini 4 wheel drives that had just been released & start to explore the Australian Outback.
Over the next 15 years we covered the Flinders Ranges, Central Australia, Kakadu, the Kimberly region including the Bungle Bungles, the Tanami, Birdsville & Strezlecki Tracks, Frazer Island, the Snowy & High Country plus lots of smaller trips around the Blue Mountains, Bunya Mountains, Carnarvon Gorge & the NSW South Coast.
Photos from Top Clockwise: The first white Suzi which we had for 3 years, White Suzi at Camerons Corner,
2nd (Blue Suzi) on "track" to Bendethra Caves, The first Hi Lux (Orange) which we also had for 3 years, Another shot of the Blue Suzi on road back from Wombeyan Caves.
After many trips in the little white Suzi whose CB call sign was "Polar Bear" we needed more space for longer trips so up graded to the new 4 cyl. Suzi Ute which we called "Big Blue".
Unfortunately this did not prove successful so we traded up to the first of 4 Toyotas. The short wheelbase Hi Lux proved just the right size & was a great fun truck. After 3 years we bought the first of the Forerunners to be released which is pictured at right in a mud hole in the Wannangatta Valley in Victoria. I had been dared I wouldn't want to "muddy" the shiney new Truck. " WRONG!"
Below is the Turbo Charged Hi Lux Twin Cab our ultimate off road Toy. We used this truck for all the Northern Territory & Kimberley trips & only traded for the latest 4Runner when we were planning retirement.
