Imagine, after laying down for the night, a big white elephant. He is as white as snow, teh most brilliant of all shades of white. You see his great white face, his big white ears, his big white trunk. He has 5 big legs. He has 6 giant shining tusks. Make this big elephant as brilliantly white as possible. His giant trunk holds a flower, and its stalk is the color of a red pearl. That golden flower is still a bud and has not yet blossomed. On his back, covered with silks, brocade, place a jewel encrusted sadle sitting high like a throne. As he trumpets, climb on the saddle and sit majesticly, erect, in charge of this magnificent beast.
The white elephant is your mind. The five hindrances he stands on. His tusks are your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, sense of touch and sense of thought. Buddhist philosophy teaches that the brain is the sense of thought. It is not your mind. It senses thoughts from the collective unconcious and fabricates. In this case, use it to fabricate this elephant. The saddle - meditation. This is a great, great exercise before falling asleep. It supercharges the unconcious. |
