Meditation
Practicing meditation is like preparing for a big game.  Practicing different skills like throwing a long ball, kicking practice, running practice, receiving practice  are skills training for a football game. One positive difference with practicing meditation skills is that, there is no pressure to perform or win.  There is nothing to grasp for and no one to judge our performance, successes or failures.  We don't need to ever stop practicing, but can practice all the different kinds of skills to enjoy the liberation a fully functioning, clear, awakened mind can produce.

Meditation Practices:

All meditation exercises should be done when fully awake.  A good beginning session to start with can be accomplished in 15-20 minutes.  Drifting into unconciousness is not meditation, it is relaxation and falling asleep.  Exercise the mind to awaken it.  To tame it.  To experience liberation, to feel bliss.
PHAT!

Zazen - Zen Buddhists mostly practice Zazen.  This is a great exercise to do the first thing in the morning, just relax, and allow your environment and yourself to come into awareness without following it.  A car goes by, hear the sound, don't follow it, don't label it.  See what is in the room, don't recognize it or follow it, just see it, smell something, just smell, don't judge it.  "In seeing just see, in hearing just hear, in walking just walk"

Samatha - called concentration or stabilizing - concentrating on an object, object can be visual, a sound, a mantra, or an idea, etc.  Mindfullness meditations fall into this area, the Tea Ceremony is a group exercise in Samatha.

Vipassana - called insight medication - noticing everything, allowing all into your awareness, inquiring, pondering an idea
