Death is a natural thing. It is even so natural it is one of the few things, if not the only, we can be sure of will happen to us. Everything that lives will one day die. But death is also one of the first things to separate us from the animals. We humans quickly developed a way to see death not as a definite end but the beginning of something new. Hence the importance of funerals and rites, and the monuments built so that the coming generations could remember someone they have never met.
