As you enter the room, you immediately notice a white pony with yellow and red hair lurking in the corner. He is wearing a dark suit which partially covers the flames stretching over his back.
"Who are you?" you question, slightly nervous.
The pony steps forward. "The name's Flare," he replies. "Just Flare. Are you authorized to be in this area?"
"Uhhh . . . Moondancer said I could look around," you explain.
Flare relaxes a little. "That's okay, then. You can take a look around at the prototype ponies."
"Prototype ponies?" you ask in confusion. "What are those?"
"Well, a very suspicious company called 'Hasbro' used to make toys that looked like ponies. Once in a while, they'd produce a rare prototype, or test pony, before they began mass production. Take a look at some of the examples here."
"See that pony? That's supposedly Satin 'n Lace. However, she was actually mass produced in Posey's pose, not in the Collector pose that she's in here," Flare says grimly, waving a hoof at a picture leaning against the wall. "However, I'm not convinced that the pony in the picture is Satin 'n Lace. She really looks more pink than lavender and you can't actually see her symbol . . . could Hasbro have dressed up a spare Cotton Candy in their rush to have the photo taken? Who knows? A company like that is capable of anything," Flare declares darkly.
"The next sets of ponies were featured in special brochures--the ones that came out around the time of the first Pony Bride. The Birthday Baby ponies, Baby Sugarcake and Baby Gametime, where shown in Lucky's mold. I don't know if they were actually supposed to be boys or not--the advert didn't say. (Personally, I'd assume from their names and from their extremely long hair that they were supposed to be girls, but who knows. This is the same company that produced a pink male pony with pink curly hair, after all. And let's not even talk about Clever Clover.)"
"But the horror doesn't stop there," Flare adds. "In the same brochure, the Twice as Fancy Babies are advertised as Peek-a-Boo baby ponies with turnable heads! This is most noticeable on Baby Up, Up, and Away and Baby Sweet Tooth, since they are in a completely different pose as well as having turning heads."
"Of course, not all the mis-matched ponies are from mail order offers--some are weird pictures of regular store-bought ponies! For example, there is a brochure that shows a picture of a blue Streaky! We're still trying to obtain a scan of her from our 'sources', though . . . "
"In addition, the UK brochures often mixed up the ponies. The official pictures of Baby Count-a-Lot and Baby Alphabet, two Playschool Baby ponies, are much different from the versions that were actually sold. Baby Count-a-Lot is in the same pose as Baby Tic-Tac-Toe (but was really sold in Baby Blossom's pose), while Baby Alphabet is pictured in Baby Cuddles' (non-BBE) pose (but was actually sold in Baby Ember's pose.) In addition, Baby Alphabet's symbol is different. In the picture, it is a book with the letters "a" and "b" on it, but she was really sold with a symbol of a book with the letters "E" and "e".
"Well, those are all the pictures of prototype ponies we can show you right now," Flare concludes. "The rest are still under investigation. They might be furbies in disguise, you know. The picture of the Playschool Baby ponies was obtained from a witness in Dream Valley. Thank you for the information, Kim."
