The Working Tools of the Witch
 |
The Athame - usually a black handled, double edged dagger,
represents the sheer will of the Witch. It can be used to cast the
Magic Circle and command spirits. It is the most important tool.
|
 |
The white handled knife - a small utility knife used to cut,
inscribe or make magickal objects usually within the Circle
|
 |
The wand - phallic in nature, usually hand made from a
branch, used to summon gentle spirits and angels whom would be unappropriate
to use a dagger.
|
 |
The cup or chalice - represents the cauldron of rebirth and
used to hold the ritual wine which is consecrated by plunging the Athame
into the cup representing the union of Goddess and God.
|
 |
The altar pentacle - typically made of wax, metal or wood
usually inscribed with the pentagram. This tool represents the element
of Earth.
|
 |
The Book of Shadows - This is the book handed down
throughout the 'family'. Each tradition had their own unique book, and
it contains rituals, spells, recipes, incantations, etc. It is written
in the Witch's own hand writing.

A scrying mirror - Familiar with the Wicked Queen from Snow
White who consulted her magic mirror? What we use is a black mirror,
easily by taking a picture frame (usually circular in shape with a silver
frame), wash the glass in a concoction of water, salt and mugwort, then
paint one side of the glass a deep black. You may need several coats
to achieve that effect. When completed, keep it wrapped in black cloth
until the night of the full moon. Take it outside, unwrap it and catch
the reflection of the moon in the glass while saying a little invocation to
the Moon Goddess. Then use it for scrying (looking into the mirror
until you see images).
