Ian took an early interest in musical instruments at Primary School.  He began learning to play the cornet at 8 years of age,going through the normal ranks to front row by the age of 12.   He moved to solo euphonium aged 15 and then latterly Baritone and EEb Bass.
Ian has played with various brass bands, in the third,old second and championship sections, being  a winning member of the band in each section.  He is one of the only few Cornishmen to have won a national title as a player and international honours as well.

As a soloist he has featured on cassette and radio, as well as making guest apperances in concerts.

Ian has played with the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, St. Keverne, Helston, Cresswell and Rowntree's, in dance groups and brass ensembles, again competively and concert wise in this country and on the continent.

He began conducting at the age of 18 and took the St. Keverne Youth Band (under 19's) to their first contest in 1973 at the SWBBA in Torquay.  In 1974 he took them again (under 16's ), gaining their first ever prizes at the CBBA contest in Truro.

Since those days he has guest conducted various bands whilst they have been between musical directors, latterly he was asked to become musical director of the Constantine Band in Cornwall, to build a brass band to competition standard and much sort after concert performances which he has achieved, so far since 1993 Constantine has won 13 trophies under his guidence.
