Match Report - Round 14
vs Yanco Wamoon
Group 20
If ever there was a game that aptly fitted the title “The one that got away” it was last Sunday’s game against Yanco. In appalling conditions with rain, greasy ball and slippery surface, West Wyalong got away to a great start to lead early and not be headed until late in the second half.

With a comfortable scoreline at half time, the Mallee Men should have come back onto the field with a plan of repeating the first half effort, and gone on to reverse the first round defeat by the Hawks. Not so.

Yanco were able to handle the wet conditions and greasy ball much better than West Wyalong and with the Mallee men handing over too much possession at the wrong end of the field, Yanco clawed their way back to hit the front late and hold on to run out winners.

The game was generally very hard fought with some massive forward exchanges and, despite the slippery surface, some great speed in both back-lines. Long kicks and chase were the order of the day, and in this area Yanco had the wood on West Wyalong. Yanco also targeted the ball in tackles forcing the loose ball and capitalizing to their advantage.

With next week’s game against competition leaders Yenda away , the boys will certainly be fired up this week at training to find the form from the past weeks and have a chance of causing an upset.

Best for the Mallee men were Ryan Prevett, Rohan Loudon (who was contained in the second half), Mick Loudon (a danger out wide all day), Chad Grintell and Dan Hartnett.

With the top 5 in First Grade now set, the drama to un-fold will be who will finish in what spot. For West Wyalong (now 5th), the best result would be to finish 3rd and have a home semi and a second chance, or 5th and play at home in the sudden death semi final. Fifth is the likely scenario, although Yanco v Leeton on August 8,(WW play Waratahs) Leeton v Yenda on 15 August,(WW bye) and Yanco v Black & Whites in the last round when we play Narrandera, could determine the positioning of the last 3 finals spots.
