PROSTHETIC REPLACEMENTS
Any biomechanical device used to replace body parts ranging from internal organs to limbs. Prosthetic replacements are connected to organic tissue via a complex synthennet neural interface, which provides the recipient with control and sensation. External replacements are covered by synth-flesh to emulate actual organic tissue. A great deal of Darth Vader's ravaged body was supported by prosthetic replacements, and Luke Skywlaker was fitted with a prosthetic hand after losing his own during his first battle with Vader. Most replacements are custom-built to fit the size of the body.
This area of medial technology spurred by the carnage of the Clone Wars, the replacement of body parts with lifelike replicas reached a high level of refinement during the Galactic Civil War.
BREATH MASK
A compact, portable life-support system designed to filter the air of unsafe environments and provide the user with oxygen or another breathable gas. Almost all starships, including the Millenium Falcon, are equipped with several standard breath masks. Worn over the mouth and nose, their units are connected to small oxygen tanks and can protect wearers in poisonous atmospheres or a near vacuum. Breath masks are frequently built into body armor as will, and are a component of the helmets worn by stromtroopers and Darth Vader.
Breath mask are frequently equipped with comlinks or, at the very least, voice amplifiers. Standard breath masks provide no protection from a total vacuum and do not shield users from corrosive atmospheres.
COMLINK
A comlink is a small, hand-held personal communications transceiver. It consists of a receiver, a transmitter, and a small power source. Comlinks vary in size and configuration from hand-held cylindrical models to wrist-mounted units, to units incorporated into armored helmets. The comlink used by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn has a port built into its base for transmitting data gathered by other devices, such as a sampler used to examine midi-chlorian levels.
A typical comlink has a range of 50 kilometers, though this range can be extended by tapping into expanded satellite communications networks. Some comlinks come equipped with encryption routines to prevent the interception of sensitive transmissions. In urban areas dense with electromagnetic activity, comlink range is greatly affected and usually supplemented by networks that help distribute the transmission to the intended recipient. Military and vehicle-mounted comlinks have greater range due to greater power sources. Starships come equipped with comlinks for short range communication - such as requesting clearance while approaching a landing facility, or while executing squadron or wing maneuvers. Since comlinks are limited to speed-of-light transmission range, they are of limited use for interstellar applications.
For that reason, ships also carry a subspace radio, which provides much greater range but also requires a greater power allotment. A subspace radio typically has a real-time range of several light years. Sector governments often set up a network of subspace transceivers that help connect the scattered worlds, forming a sector-wide communications grid. The most powerful and far-reaching communications medium is the HoloNet. A network of non-mass transcievers submerged into the time-bending dimension of hyperspace connects worlds in real-time across incredible distances. The HoloNet, maintained by the galactic government, is a horrendously expensive venture, and similarly the devices required to communicate on the HoloNet are costly to the average galactic citizen. In the time of the Empire, much of the public applications of the HoloNet were dismantled, making the galaxy-wide communications network a tool of the military and corporate interests.
RESTRAINING BOLTS
A cilinder device attached to a droid to override its motor functions and enslave the robot to the will of its master. A restaining bolt monitors the droid's activity, ensuring it from wandring away. A restraining bolt can also be keyed to a caller, a handheld control unit used to instantly summon or paralyze the droid.
The scavenging Jawas of Tatooine often fit the droids they salvage with restraining bolts. They did so with Artoo-Detoo and See-Threepio. Once the droids were transferred to Owen Lars, so to was command of the bolts. The security systems at the Lars Homestead restricted any restrained droid from leaving the farm. Artoo-Detoo tricked Luke into removing the bolt, allowing him to sneak away at night to continue his search for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Although there are many varieties of bolts with different levels of command, the ones used on Artoo and Threepio were relatively simple ones. The bolts, which were spot-welded onto the droid's surface, were paired with an "owner", or "caller," a hand-held device capable of three basic commands. The owner's three settings could call a droid forward (COME), force it to halt (STOP), or to enact the tasks that were just verbally spoken to it (ORDERS). A droid will not violate its basic programming when following orders, so the last setting can only be used to carry out tasks within the droid's operating parameters. Jawas also use restraining bolts as part of the recipe for their cobbled-together ionization blasters.
LOCATOR
A locator allows the user to locate materials or large vehicles or organic matter like creatures or persons. Most locaters have a range of a few kilometers and can be use in any situation. The device allows the user to select a material and then scans the area for it. It indicates in wich direction the material can be found and how far it is to it. But when the object is blocked by other materials it will be harder to find.
Han Solo used a locator to look for Luke Skywalker. He looked for human material and that of the Tauntaun. But because Luke was in a cave he could not locate him untill he defeted the Wampa and escaped.
MEDITATION CHAMBER
Meditation chambers are as unique as the individuals who make use of them. Darth Vader built a specialized mediation chamber with a comfortable reclining chair, a comlink and visual display, and a mechanical device for quickly removing and replacing his helmet and breath mask. The sphere was completely pressurized and climate controlled. It was located on the Super Star Destroyer, the Executor.
About 5,000 years earlier, the Sith Lord Naga Sadow made use of a huge meditation sphere. During his war against the Old Republic, sadow plotted his moves and controlled his forces from the floating orb.
HOLOCRON
A legendary artifact, used to store the knowledge and wisdom of the Jedi. These devices are palm sized crystal cubes that use primitive holographic technology, in connection with the force, in order to function as an interactive learning tool.
Mysterious symbols are engraved in every holocron, giving an indication at it's true age. Such an apparatus can usually only be activated by a Jedi, who can then have a sort of conversation with the long deceased Jedi Master who's teachings fills the holocron.
The Jedi Archives hold most of the Holocrons, and contain the only known Sith Holocron, whose very existence is revealed only to a handful of Jedi at the highest levels. This infernal device contains the teachings of powerful evil, but have somethimes been consulted when Sith emenies posed a thread to the Jedi.
CYBORG CONSTRUCT
Biotech's latest model the Aj^6. Boasts greater storage capacity than all other models combined. It allows a person to become a computer-liaison between himself and a central computer system, of a large building or city. It allows full access to the central core, allowing the person to control all security devices, comm systems, repulsorlifts, equipment and life-support systems.
The Cyborg Construct is a computer bracket implaned in the to the back of a persons head. The implant can have side affects as Lobot experienced. he could contact the central computer of Cloud City, but he lost the ability to speak.
Advertised as, "Artificial intelligence worth saving your head for".
DATA PAD
Data pads are mobile multi purpose devices. They come in different shapes and sizes. Most Data pads are used for viewing events and are coupled to a Holocam Droid. The droid captures the event and the spectator can view this on his Data pad up close.
Data pads are also used to monitor installations, data conversion or other purposes. Most Data Pads have a touch screen control, and are wirelessly connected to any viewing service.
HOLOGLOBE
A Hologlobe is a small sphere, that holds small amount of visual data. If the Hologlobe is put on a hologlobe reader, the requested data is displayed in the room as a hologram.
Obi-Wan used a hologlobe to save data about the location of Kamino from the Jedi Archive and showed it to Yoda and a group of padawan's. Liam, one of the padawan learners, detected that the missing planet of Kamino was still at the suggested location, but that the data in the archive was deleted.
