Self-Injury
I am a person who self-injures (update--It has been 8 years since my last SI Episode.).....and that is why I am writing this page with links to webpages that explain more about self-injury....in the hopes that it will help someone else to take the steps needed to NOT self-injure.....PLEASE BE AWARE THAT SOME OF THE SITES MAY BE **TRIGGERING**...and you need to protect yourself accordingly...

Some of the Characteristics of Self-Mutilator's
- Characteristic One
- A feeling of mental disintegration, or inability to think.
- Characteristic Two
- A rage that can't be expressed, or even consciously perceived, toward a powerful figure (or figures) in their life, usually a parent.

There are also two different types of people who self-injure...or rather two characteristics which set them apart....

- Non-Dissociative
- One who suffers from intolerable rage with which she is only capable of attacking herself....
- Numbness is not the goal [of cutting], feeling the pain is...
- Dissociative
- One who feels disconnected from parent, from others and ultimately from herself. When she experiences an "attack" or this sense of disconnection, she feels mental disintegration developing. At this point she needs a powerful distraction around which to organize and stop the mental disintegration. Pain and her own blood provids a sufficient distraction and works as a tool to help the cutter center herself.

Some important information for friends of self-cutters or for those who are trying to help self-cutters...
- Real information about the disorder, not drama is the surest way to stabilize the patient's reaction.
- A victim's illness is not her identity.
- The easiest way to break through this defense is to indicate that you are comfortable getting close to the person's pain, rage, and despair.
- Talk, trust, healthy attachment, intamcy, and secure communication are the necessary building blocks for change.
- Early detection, as with nearly all developing problems (medical or psychiatric) offers the best prognosis and outcome, with the help of skilled treatment and a supportive environment.
