I obtained a coppy of the evidently rare "scenario editor" verson of Transport Tycoon from a friend a couple of years ago, and I got addicted quickly. A few months ago, I also downloaded the Deluxe version, and I love it because the advanced signaling allows me to make complex rail interchanges that resemble those of highways. A few months ago, I got a friend addicted, too -- please see Revival section below.
Transport Tycoon is absolutely the best game ever made! The original version, by MicroProse and Chris Sawyer (a company, not a person) was released in 1995. Later, an enhanced version was released with an alternate graphics set and a scenario editor. This version is rare, however, because it was soon replaced with Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which also had a scenario editor. This new version, however, sported "advanced signaling," UI improvements, and 4 distinct climates in which to build your transport empire -- more than just alternate graphics sets. These are just some of the many improvements.
I am attempting to stage a revival of Transport Tycoon, so please download, copy, or obtain legally the game and play it so long that you get addicted. If Chris Sawyer is not already working on a Transport Tycoon II, this increased interest should couse them to do so. (Note: RollerCoaster Tycoon was originally supposed to be Transport Tycoon II -- you can see the evolution of the user interface form TTO, TTD, to RCT. )
Road vehicles can actually be quite profitable. This is especially true if you connect two somewhat distant cities -- about 1/4 or 1/2 width of map apart -- with multiple vehicles. Of course, it also helps to make sure that the cities are large enough to support a good number of passengers. Also, the number of hills should be minimized.
Road vehicles can also be used to benefit other transport services. Creating "crosstown" bus lines can dramatically increase the size, and passenger capacity, of a town. Also, creating adequate bus service to a town is suggested before building a railroad nearby, especially if the rail project is complex.
Railroad strategy has become my master medium. I have found that one can best service industries with not several isolated rail lines but one large network. TTD, with its advanced signaling, gives one the opportunity to create vast flowing interchanges very similar to highways.
