Melbourne's Z3 Class Trams

In 1979, Z3 class trams 116 and 117 were introduced to Melbourne's tram passengers, running free introductory services along Bourke St. between Spencer St. and Spring St. Passengers received a complimentary set of Melbourne tram postcards on each trip.

The Z3 class, built at the Comeng (now Adtranz) factory in Dandenong, Vic. was a follow on order from the Z1/2 class trams. Complaints about loading delays led to a third door at the rear of the tram and repositioning the centre door to the middle of the tram.Riding qualities were improved greatly from the Z1/2 class by the mounting of the tram on Duewag monomotor bogies fitted with Bochum type 54 resilient wheels.

Modifications.

All trams have been fitted with Amplimesh security screens around the driver's cabin for one person operation, and have had skybreaker advertising panels fitted above the windows. Pantographs have been fitted to all 115 trams. Conductor's consoles have been removed (except on 158 and 186 but no extra seating has been added except on 149 which was burnt to the ground at West Maribyrnong terminus in November 1999).

All trams have been fitted with ticket machines and validators, the ones owned by Yarra Trams are not going to be repainted in the new colour scheme.
