In 1973, PCC tram 1041 was introduced into service, initially on the Bourke St. lines, but it later ran all over the system for demonstration purposes. 1041 introduced several innovations that were to be featured on the subsequent order for 100 new Z class trams. A new colour scheme (marigold) front entrance and rear exit, Boselli flap type indicators, a seated conductor and a level floor through the tram were the main differences between 1041 and the W series. 1041 was stored in 1984 after its final trip from Footscray to Moonee Ponds (route 82). Now part of the PTC Heritage fleet, 1041 is currently at Preston Workshops undergoing cosmetic restoration.

Between 1975 and 1978, the 100 strong Z1 class was manufactured, the bodies by Comeng (now ADtranz) at Dandenong, the bogies at Comeng at Granville, NSW and the electrics at ASEA in Lilydale. All the bits and pieces ended up at Preston Workshops where they were put together, a Z1 tram resulting. In 1979, the order was extended by 15 trams pending the finalisation of the Z3 contract.

Modifications

Several modifications have been made to these trams, the first in 1977 when No. 5 was fitted with thyristor chopper controls to evaluate this type of control for subsequent trams. The installation was successful, and No. 5 was reconverted in 1983.
In 1992, No. 67 was modified extensively as a prototype for a half life refurbishment of the class. The conductors consoles were replaced by four new seats, the seats scoring new covers. Trolley poles were replaced by a pantograph, the trolley bases being retained for emergency use and new headlight clusters and dot matrix destinations were installed. The tram was reconverted to original condition in late 1996.
The modifications mainly involved the fitting of Amplimesh security screens to the drivers cabins. Currently, these trams have been fitted with ticket machines, validators and new dot matrix destinations and advertising panels, some on the side of the tram and some on the roof. The roof was strengthened so pantographs could be fitted and defective body panels have been replaced. The trucks have also been improved, making for a much smoother ride.

Listed below are all the Z1 and Z2 class trams built, what depot they are allocated to, and the fate of the withdrawn class members. Modifications are also listed.
