Operated By Swanston Trams Essendon Depot.
Melbourne's tram route 57 starts at the Sir Robert Risson tram terminus on the corner of Flinders and Elizabeth Sts which is a two track terminus with seating accessible via a scissors crossover, only two exist in Melbourne. Upon departure, trams go up Elizabeth St (sharing tracks with routes 19, 59 and Sunday route 68), crossing Collins St ( route 11 to West Preston, route 12 to St Kilda Beach and route 109 between Mont Albert and Port Melbourne), Bourke St ( route 86 to Bundoora RMIT and route 96 between St Kilda Beach and East Brunswick) and LaTrobe St (routes 23, 24, 30, 34 and the City Circle tourist tram) before arriving at the Queen Victoria Market (fresh food five days a week and over 1000 stalls to choose from).
West Maribyrnong trams turn left into Victoria St, skirting the market and croosing Peel St and route 55 to West Coburg then arrive at the North Melbourne shopping centre where trams turn right into Errol St, left into Queensberry st and right into Abbotsford St until arrival at Flemington Rd. Route 59 to Airport West shares track until arrival at Racecourse Rd where route 57 trams turn left, going under the Upfield railway line, crossing Moonee Ponds Creek, going under the City Link tollway and passing a Housing Commission estate and the Newmarket shopping centre before going under the Broadmeadows railway line at Newmarket station and passing the new Lynch's Bridge housing estate that was built on the site of the former Newmarket Saleyards, and then arriving at Epsom Rd next to one of the many entrances to Flemington Racecourse, home of the Melbourne Cup.
Trams then pass under the Flemington Racecourse branch railway, then the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, which hosts the Royal Melbourne Show each September, then turn into Union Rd Ascot Vale and pass a siding provided to store trams for Showgrounds and racecourse events, though it is rarely used these days. The Ascot Vale shops are next before trams turn into Maribyrnong Rd, which is shared with route 82 between Moonee Ponds and Footscray. After crossing the Maribyrnong River and entering Raleigh Rd, trams turn right into a side of the road open ballasted reservation that starts near the Rosamund Rd intersection. This is followed until the terminus is reached at Cordite Ave, route 82 having turned into its own reservation near Wests Rd.
The West Maribyrnong terminus is a single track in reservation with a waiting shed provided at right angles to the tram line. There is also a siding which was provided during the Second World War to accommodate wartime tram services which served the ordinance and armaments factoriesin the area. The siding has not felt the weight of a tram for some time and it would be extremely risky to allow anything heavier than a scrubber to enter it.
49 stops, average travel time 44 minutes day, 39 minutes night.
