Three Roads
Three roads to Copper Harbor lead,
Converging there to greet
This little piece of Michigan---
God’s paradise retreat.
The first is Scenic Forty One.
It starts close by then wends
Its way to sunny Florida
Where pavement promptly ends.
We pass a well-groomed golf course near
The Mountain Lodge we like
Located past the Garden Brook
Where walkers come to hike.
Ahead we spy a pleasant lake;
Medora’s calm today,
Yet crammed with sporting fish that bite
On bait that’s tossed their way.
Soft breezes stir this tunnel road
Of richly verdant green,
With leafy canopy above
That shades the sylvan scene.
This woodsy, winding way provides
A roller coaster ride
Through valley glens and tree-clad hills
Where forest fauna hide.
Another drive that you’ll enjoy
Is MI Twenty Six.
It’s known for awesome vistas that
Are swell for scenic pics.
This Shore Road winds along the coast
Where frothy waves are seen
When mighty Lake Superior
Is turbulent and mean.
We pass small, craggy islands that
Above the surface reach,
And quiet miles along each stretch
Of sandy, golden beach.
It’s best to drive at forty per
Or forty-five or more
While cruising down this highway near
The wind-swept, rock-hewn shore.
The Devil’s Wash Tub is a spot
The tourists find quite nice---
A grotto carved in ancient rock
By water, wind and ice.
Both Hebard Park and Esrey are
Two places where a bunch
Of picnic tables wait for you
To sit and eat your lunch.
The towns of Eagle Harbor and
Then Eagle River slip
Into your sight, both adding to
The pleasure of your trip.
A third way, Brockway Mountain Drive,
Is one route you will prize;
A branch road off of Twenty Six,
It soars to scrape the skies.
Best not to race around the curves
Or drive too near the edge;
Most people stop and park their car
Some distance from the ledge.
Once there atop the mountain range
You’ll see grand "postcard" views.
Snap lots of pictures, stay as long
As all of you may choose.
You’ll see the Skytop Inn close by
Where rocky cliffs are sheer,
A place where you perhaps might buy
A special souvenir.
Each highway is so scenic and
A most delightful treasure
That having three of them is more
Than triple times the pleasure.
There is no other place on earth
Where three great roads provide
Us with majesty sightings and
A most delightful ride |
