10. ANTOINE (ANTHONY) (CARPENTIER)5 CARPENTER*
(JOSEPH (CARPENTIER)4, CHARLES-MARIE (CARPENTIER)3, ETIENNE (CARPENTIER)2, NOEL (CARPENTIER)1) was born Abt.
1807 in St-Cuthbert, Quebec, Canada, and died July 05, 1858 in St-Cuthbert,
Quebec, Canada. He married JULIA (POITIER) PAQUIN* April
04, 1836 in Ste-Elisabeth, Joliette, Quebec, daughter of LOUIS PAQUIN* and CATHERINE DUFRESNE*. She was born Abt. 1810 in Canada, and died
Unknown.
Anthony Carpenter and Julia
(Poitier) Paguin were the father and mother of Cyrille Carpenter. Her maiden
name was written as Poitier on Cyrille's marriage license which was obtained
from the marriage records of St. Ignatius Church in Houghton, Mi, on 7/21/97.
It also listed the parents of Lucy Allie as George Allie, and Emma Fontaine of
Wisconsin. Anthony is the Americanized version of Antoine. He was a farmer in
St-Cuthbert. He married Julie Paquin on April 4, 1836 in Ste-Elisabeth, but
they settled in St-Cuthbert where he came from. St-Cuthbert and Ste-Elisabeth
are two close villages near Berthier, in the Lanaudiere area. His marriage
register with Julie Paquin notes: Antoine Carpentier (son of Joseph Carpentier
and Francoise Chaput). He was buried: 7/7/1858 St-Cuthbert, Quebec,
Canada. Antoine is not listed [in the
Maurice-dit-Chaput] thread as one of the children of Joseph and Françoise
Carpenter, but we know that he was one of their children because of the entry
in the birth records at St-Cuthbert.
********
1881 Canadian census: his
following children are shown: Felix
page 11, Antoine page 45, and Pierre page 43. Domathilde and Elzear were
not listed, but Domithilde was probably married. Burial: July 07, 1858, St-Cuthbert,
Quebec, Canada.
Reading Julia's surname on
the marriage license of Cyrille and Lucy as "Portier" caused all
sorts of problems, but we know now, without doubt, that it was actually
"Paquin".
3/03: Email from Suzanne:
"Searching in New England's index, I was stopped by the introduction of
the Southbridge marriage index. Southbridge is a little town of Massachusetts
near Springfield. The author explained
French Canadian immigration during the nineteen century and how their last
names were transformed into English.
Because of their lack of education, they didn't know how to read and
write even their names, either in French or English, a language they didn't
know in the beginning. The only
way for them to write down their name
was by sound. The author gave a little
list of French Canadian last names and their various English forms. PAQUIN was
in the list. I was amazed to see that Paquin was
transformed to "Potter" as well as "Paken" and
"Perkins". Potter and Pothier
are pretty close, but I'm unable to explain how an English man can understand
Potter instead of Paquin---but it is possible.
And if he can understand Potter, he can understand Pothier, too. Now we can be much more confident that Julie
Paquin and Julie Pothier are the same person."
It's helpful to know that
the name of Paquin became Potter or Paken or Perkins and clears up the
confusion that was caused so long ago. Actually, Julia Paquin was written on
the marriage record of her son Cyrille as Julia Poitier, not Pothier, but the
knowledge that Paquin was written as Poitier at one time remains the same. It's
also possible that the clerk's handwriting was illegible and Poitier was
spelled something like P o t h i e r. Paquin, not Poitier, is listed on Julia's marriage license and also as the mother of
Antoine's children. --- Frank
Tanguays Dictionnaire
Genealogique shows on page 579 that
dit names for Poitier are Lafontaine and Pothier and doesn't include Paquin.
However, we know that Cyrille's parents
were Antoine and Julie from the marriage records at St. Ignatius Church. We
also know that Cyrille wasn't very literate: He didn't know the day or month or
year in which he was born, and he signed his mortgage with an "X"
instead of with his name. It's possible that Lucy, who also couldn't write, had
her mother, Mary Fontaine, provide the information to the marriage clerk---but
instead of giving Cyrille's mother's last name of Paguin, she gave HER maiden
name of Fontaine, i.e. Lafontaine, i.e. Paquin. Or maybe the clerk was the one
who messed up the names. --- Frank
11/17/2002 - "We don't know if Mary was literate. On this marriage record she is listed as EMMA Fontain. There is also a chance that Cyril knew when he was born. Whoever provided the info didn't know. Sometimes, info was provided by the witnesses who may not have had the right info. I'm not sure that having the name Poitier listed is a drawback." --- Buddy

Houghton county marriage records of 8/20/1903: Charles
Carpenter of Chassel, age 46, marries Marie Lebarge, age 45. He
was born in Canada and his father was Basil Carpenter.
Charles moved to an area near where Cyrille lived in Houghton,
Michigan. He's
the first cousin of Cyrille and was probably the best man or a witness at
Cyrille's wedding in 1879, and his
father, Basil, was the brother of Antoine. 1880 census:
Charles Carpenter, age 24, laborer, was
rooming with Henry
Goddell. (Portage Twp., Houghton, MI, NA film # T90581, page #439C, Family History Library film 1254581)

cousin.
Birth register in
St-Cuthbert: Charles Carpentier, the son of Basile Carpentier, farmer, and Angelisue Sauvageau, was born
and baptized October 16, 1852. Birth date seen on one census is 1859, but he
probably wanted to make himself appear younger than he really was. Charles
married Marie in 1903. The priest performing the ceremony was A. Vermase, and
the witnesses were Pierre Destramph, Sr. and Pierre Destramph, Jr.
1900 US census for Chassell

because there are about 12 other persons are listed, all Canadians and all born in Canada).
The Houghton county death

(ANTOINE (ANTHONY) (CARPENTIER)5, JOSEPH (CARPENTIER)4, CHARLES-MARIE (CARPENTIER)3, ETIENNE (CARPENTIER)2, NOEL (CARPENTIER)1) was born
October 02, 1847 in St-Cuthbert, Berthier, Quebec, Canada, and died May 19,
1927 in Houghton, Houghton, MI. He
married LUCY (LUCIE) ALLIE* April 13, 1879 in St. Ignatius Church, Houghton,
Houghton, MI, daughter of GEORGE ALLIE* and MARY FONTAINE*. She was born July 1862 in Two Rivers, Kewanee, WI, and died May 10, 1943 in
Houghton, Houghton, MI.
Cyrille was
French/Catholic. He signed documents with an “X”. He was born in Quebec, Canada and moved to Houghton, MI, possibly as early as 1848, but more likely
about 1865. As he was the fifth boy of the family, he had little hope of
inheriting a part of the farm, so he left the area in search of better
prospects. On March 12, 1878 he became a naturalized citizen. He was baptized
10/3/1847. He also used a birth date of November 1848. In the 3/14/1878 issue
of the Portage Lake Mining Gazette (Circuit Court Proceedings) is
Cyrille's Notice of Intent to become an American citizen.
*********
My mother thought Cyrille
might have had two children who had died at an early age, and mentioned the
names of Delphius and Rose as possibilities.
I think she made a mistake as to the male's name; Delphius, we now know,
was a brother of Cyrille. The death records of Portage show a Crel Carpenter,
son of Ciril and Addie Carpenter who had died 1/1894, 3 months old. This is
uncertain, but Crel might be close enough to Cyril to indicate a junior. The Addie is more difficult, but if Lucy's middle
name, which is unknown, had been Harriet (or Hattie) a hurried registrar might
have written Addie. Birth records have
to be checked for 11/1893. - Frank

11/14/2002 - Suzanne:
"HURRAH ! HURRAH ! I'VE GOT IT ! The last child of Antoine Carpentier & Julie Paquin, and the
only one after Cyril, is DELPHIS. He was born on September 3, 1854 in
St-Cuthbert. I viewed with care each record of St-Cuthbert from 1847 until
1858. Then I found Delphis' birth date
in 1854 and Antoine's death on July 5th, 1858, at the age of 51 years. Is that
an irrefutable proof? --- Suzanne

11/2002 - Buddy: "1881 Canadian census: On page 44 I found Cyril Carpentier living with Dolphis Carpentier, 25 years old, and a younger brother. Cyrille's age is 30 years and his occupation is Voyager. The person who provided the census info may not have known his birth year. The occupation is the item of interest. Voyager means traveler, so Cyrille, who had earlier gone to the US and married Lucy had returned for a family visit. But why? Cyril and Lucy had married in early 1880 and his occupation on the 1880 US census was "tug engineer". Being a tug boat engineer would have required his presence in Houghton because the shipping season was open at that time of year. Had a close family member died? Was there a will to be read? The 1900 census shows that he came to the US in 1867, just after the civil War." --- Buddy

Ye
Old Carpenter Homestead
(Cyrille's
and Lucy's Pad)
Purchased in 1883, this
residence was located at 1217 Jasper Street, Houghton, MI., as described in the
Probate papers. But the original
address, as stated in other records, was 167 Jasper Street and had been
renumbered by the city at a later date.
In the 1932 Houghton Telephone Directory, Joe Abb's house, which was
right next door, had the address of 171 Jasper Street. In the Probate papers it's recorded as 1219
Jasper Street. The township must have
changed the address system. The
Carpenter address cannot be found in that directory I have because the page had
been removed, but they didn't have a phone anyway during the depression years,
(and even later, as far as I know) making all their calls from the Abb
house. It was here that about eleven
children were born to Cyril and Lucy, along with some of their descendents, and
where many reunions took place in the summer time when the relatives who had
moved away from the Houghton area returned to visit and enjoy vacations.
The Land Contract whereby
the land for this home was purchased for $150.00, was dated 8/27/1883 between
Cyril and the Sheldon and Columbian Copper Company and sets forth the terms of
purchase. The Release of Mortgage,
dated 11/12/1886, shows that the mortgage held by Joseph Croze [who also
employed Cyril on the boats] in the amount of $150.00 was paid. It's probable that the $150.00 included both
the land and the building.
The eventual sale of the
Homestead in 1965 was handled by Theodore Messner, Attorney, of Houghton. It had been occupied by Mabel Earnest until
her death in 1958 and after that by Arthur Carpenter until about 1960. Joe Abb, who lived next door, was the
caretaker until the Homestead was finally sold.
On September 23, 1963, the
will and estates of Cyril Carpenter and Lucy Carpenter were probated in the Probate
Court for the County of Houghton,
petitioned by Roy Carpenter (because he lived up there) at the gentle
insistence of RFS & Dorothy. For some reason, probably because there were
so many heirs and so little money
involved, disposition of this matter had languished over the years. I
had pushing for the two estates to be probated and was probably the moving
force that brought it about, because I didn't want to personally be stuck with
resolving it at some far future date.
My parents had started paying the property taxes on it, although quite
small, to prevent it from going to the State, and this would have gone on
indefinitely. The property wasn't in
very good condition and no family members had indicated a desire to fix it up
and live there.
The house was put up for a
public auction, (for the second time, as no bids were received at the first
auction) conducted by a Special Circuit Court Commissioner, at the front door
of the Court House in the Village of Houghton on June 29, 1965. Actually, it was held at the end of the
sidewalk by the street. Only a couple
of people showed up, including Joe Abb who entered the bidding to force the
price higher. We just happened to be up
their at the time on vacation. The
property was finally bid off at $1,100.00 to Ripley Products Company. After paying my parents $143.84 for the
taxes they had paid and money they had advanced to initiate the litigation,
further distribution of the proceeds were used to pay the remaining property
taxes for two years, court fees, and the attorney's fees. The rest went to the heirs. Unfortunately, each heir received zero, as
there was nothing left to distribute.
Thus ended the property
transaction. Yes...I was sorely tempted
to enter the auction when I learned the winning bid would be around one
thousand dollars. I would have been
happy to own the Homestead, around which centered so many joyous memories, at
such an inexpensive price. It would have been a place to stay in the summer. However, I didn't live in Houghton and had no
interest in leaving my teaching position in Madison Heights to move there.
There was no one to care for the place.
Also, it wasn't in very good shape and considerable funds might have
been needed to repair it. [The person
who bought it had it razed]. The main
reason detouring me, however, was the consideration that my relatives might
have thought I had cheated them (although they could have bid on it themselves
had they wanted it) if I had gotten it for a thousand dollars. Yes, I
considered buying it, but didn't.....and wonder even to this day in 1996 if I
had made the right decision.
So the house was torn down
by the new owner and in its place was erected the grocery store known as Jim's
Food Mart which we visit every year. Its parking lot is where Joe Abb's house,
with the great cellar door on the outside that led into the dark interior of
the basement, once stood. I imagine, as
I even now stroll the aisles of the
store, what remains, if any, might lie beneath in the old stone-walled basement
with its incredibly low ceiling and
hard-packed floor of dirt. It's
possible that in some distant day, when the grocery store itself is razed,
someone might stumble upon what might still be left of the Old Carpenter
Homestead.
Another part of the estate
was the lot at Forest Hill Cemetery, valued in excess of $100, which had space
for 16 graves. It was proposed in
1963 that 1/2 of the lot, that part not
being used by family, should be sold and the proceeds used for improvements on
the family half. I don't know if these
lots were ever probated.
On 11/22/1901 Cyrille had also purchased land at the northeast quarter of section 21, in Township fifty two North of Range thirty five west of Michigan Meridian in Michigan, containing one hundred and sixty acres. Quite likely, this is the property my mother told me about, saying we might still own the mineral rights beneath it. In the Carpenter Memorabilia File is an envelope upon which is written by my mother: "Save - Some day this property may be mined. The estate holds the mineral rights." This note probably alludes to the property once owned along the range, south of Houghton, and not the Carpenter Homestead property on which Jim's Food Market was built. This was never probated, as far as I know, and I have no idea what the legalities are regarding it. --- Frank

TUG
BOATS...XXXXXXXX… ARE ACOM'IN
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Cyrille Carpenter was a
marine engineer who worked on the tug boats motoring our of Houghton, MI. One of the boats he frequently worked on was
the Valerie. It was owned by the Joseph Croze Coal, Wood and Tug
Co., which also owned the tug Cora
A. Sheldon. Its headquarters was
at the Croze Coal Dock where the Messner Dock currently stands (1980). Croze also held the mortgage on Cyril's
house.
The wooden Valerie,
built in 1872 or 92 in Sandusky, was 69 feet long, its beam 18 feet, and its
draw seven feet. It was usually used to
tow barges along the Portage Water Way
from the early 1880's to 1918. It moved
Jacobsville Sandstone from the Portage Entry quarries and towed log rafts from Carver's Bay to the
Pryor Mill in Ripley, and pulled barges of coal or lumber. Sometimes they towed scows to Bete Grises or
Lac LaBelle. At times, fishing groups
chartered the tugs for fishing trips to Isle Royale. Trips were also made to
the Nipigon region of Ontario, the Apostle Islands, the Silver Inlet region
near Thunder Bay, the Huron Mountain area, or like regions.
The Valerie had a
five man crew consisting of a skipper, who was the wheelsman, an engineer
(Cyril), a fireman and two deckies, one of whom acted as cook on long journeys
when no tie ups were needed. It was a
sister ship of the Cora A. Sheldon, also a Croze owned tower. One newspaper article states: "Being
the Captain of a Croze tug was a big mark of distinction. Each skipper occupied a hallowed niche in
the community and he was much revered as was the chief engineer."
There are five newspapers
articles in the C & L Carpenter Memorabilia Folder which contain much more
general information. One, dated
7/3/1901, tells how the Fern, another tug, had floundered and sunk off the coast of Eagle River. The Valerie took a rescue team to help out
and then returned with the team. There
is quite a mystery surrounding this event, as the Fern was discovered by
the divers to be empty of people and their effects and a small boat in which
they might have made their escape---but they were never found. Another article tells the story of how the Valerie
itself floundered off the coast near the entry in August of 1894. Cyril also
worked on the Nellie Cotton as the engineer. David (Pat) Allie was the
captain.
Ma reminisced once about
waving goodbye to her father when he boarded the trolley in front of the
Homestead for the trip down to the docks.
She knew she wouldn't see him again for perhaps days or weeks. But he always returned---and stayed around
long enough to sire at least ten and possibly eleven children. I don't know what Cyril did for a living
after the Valerie stopped work in 1918 until his death in 1927.
The Carpenters operated a
garage in downtown Houghton, ca1915, probably run by one or more of the
boys. Artifacts which might have come
from there are a screwdriver with changeable drivers, an oil can and a solder
pot. --- Frank

OBIT-MINING GAZETTE - FRIDAY
- May 20, 1927- CYRIL CARPENTER, PIONEER MAARINE ENGINEER, PASSES
Cyril Carpenter, aged 79, highly esteemed Houghton resident and Pioneer Marine engineer of the Keweenaw District, passed away at 8 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 1657 Jasper St., after an illness of three years. Death resulted from infirmities of his advanced age.
Mr. Carpenter came to
Houghton when he was 17 years old (1865) and had resided here ever since. Most of the time he was in Houghton he
served as a marine engineer, having been engineer on the tugs Golden Eagle,
Donken, Robinson, Maythan, Bob Anderson and Sheldon. For many years he was Chief Engineer on the
tugs Valerie and Nellie Cotton.
He was well known in marine circles in the Lake Superior District where
his ability was highly regarded. The deceased was a member of the Tugmen's
Association and the Houghton Lodge of Maccabees.
He is survived by five
sons: William of Menominee, Lawrence R. of Milwaukee, Roy of Houghton, and
Albert and Arthur at home; and three daughters, Mrs. Nobel Ernest and Mrs.
Joseph Abb of Houghton and Mrs. Richard Searight of Beloit, Wis. Funeral arrangements will be announced
later. [Cyril had been retired when he died of chronic nephrites, whatever that
is.]

A request for a copy of the
'declaration of intent' letter, that Cyrille would have had to file to begin
the process to become a citizen, has been sent back by the County Clerk of
Houghton stating that a search for the years 1848 through 1906 had been
fruitless. The 'intent' must have been filed elsewhere. This letter was dated
September 17, 1997 (letter in file)
A letter, dated 10 January
1997, was sent to the Archivist of the Burton Historical Collection at the
Detroit Public Library requesting information about material that the Royal
Maccabee's Insurance Company, of Southfield, Michigan, had donated. Cyrille was
a member in good standing with the Houghton Lodge of Maccabees. As such his
estate would have been entitled to receive the proceeds of a life insurance
policy that was provided as a member benefit. Also, his membership application
would have contained the location of his birthplace, a piece of info that was
not known at the time. Initial dialog with the manager of the fraternal benefit
section of the Maccabee Southfield office brought out the fact that the files
pertaining to the time frame of Cyrille's death had been donated to the Burton
Collection some years before. During a phone call to the Burton Archives,
before the letter was written, assurance was given that the requested
information was available. However, after some weeks, a reply came back with
the information that it did not exist. The belief is that the donated material
is probably in the original packing boxes sitting in the library basement
waiting to be sorted, classified, and shelved. (letter in file).
A land contract to purchase
a tract of property was signed 27 August 1883 with the Columbian Copper
Company. This tract is designated as row 2, block 10, and the purchase price is
$150.00 plus interest. The terms of the contract require the payment of $50.00
in the month of September 1883 and one hundred dollars on or before the twenty
seventh day of August 1884. (contract in file) This property is where the
Carpenter family home was located until it was razed in 1965. Apparently
Cyrille didn't have the cash in hand to make the property purchase so he
borrowed the money from his employer, Joseph Croze, and signed a Mortgage
agreement with him. The indenture was executed by Cyril and Lucy on 19 December
1884 and was satisfied in 12 November 1886. (document in file). On 27 July 1888
the office of the Columbian Copper Company of New York issued a Warranty deed
to Cyrille for the property he had purchased back in August 1883. (Deed in

The last sentence means
that, because the priest forgot to write the word "father" the first
time, he had to write it between two lines. He also made a spelling mistake on
Cyrille's first name: the right spelling is CYRILLE not Ciryle nor Cyrile.

Lucy was French/Catholic.
She was born in Two Rivers, WI in 1862 and lived there at least through 1870

On file is a note made by
RFS telling of the marriage of Lucy and Cyril at Lac Labelle. This is doubtful, because the priest
probably would have mentioned it on the marriage certificate. It's possible that they honeymooned there,
but in April there would still have been snow on the ground. In July of 1996, I
checked the Lac Labelle index to marriages, 1867-1950, that was recorded at the
Eagle River Court House, along with the
baptism and birth records. No
Carpenters were found. The clerk said
people didn't always bother to register their marriages. If Cyrille and Lucy were married at Lac
Labelle, as my mother thought, they didn't have their marriage recorded
there. However, it is recorded in
Houghton, so it's likely they were married there and the notion that they were
married at Lac Labelle is not accurate.
I also went to the Catholic
Rectory (Mohawk, four blocks north of post office in yellow building) and
checked marriage and death records 1868-1949. There I was told that Tech
Archives had records prior to 1868 and baptismal from 1863-1885. I learned that records prior to 1888 of
Keweenaw County are in the vault of St. Ignatius, and also that the Sacred
Heart in Laurium might have records---but then learned it had burned down. I was advised by the priest to check the
Houghton County Court House for Houghton Co. records.

Their marriage license
shows that Cyril was 29 years of age, his occupation was laborer, his residence
was Houghton, and his birthplace was Canada. Lucy was 17 years old, residing in Houghton, and she was born in
Wisconsin. Witnesses to the wedding were Charles Carpenter and Luna Forgesson,
both of Houghton. The marriage took place in St. Ignatius Church, Houghton,
Michigan and was solemnized by Fabian Pawler, Pastor. The license, # 1552, was
received for the record on the 5th day of January 1880 and recorded in Liber 1
of marriages on page 111, Houghton County, MI.

the birth information for Lucy was not in their files. This request was made
because of information provided orally, by someone unknown, to Richard
Searight, that Lucy had been born in Kewaunee. This may still be a true
statement, but other sources will have to be found, such as a Church Baptismal
record, in order to verify her birth. (Letter is in file.)"

Lucy's birthday: From Buddy
- 7/03: "Lucy's certificate of death, local file # 10, filed in Houghton
County, MI on May 28, 1943, lists her birth date as July 1863 in Wisconsin. She
was widowed and 80 years of age when she died May 10, 1943, at her home located
at 1217 Jasper Street, Houghton, MI. She had lived in Houghton about 60 years.
Her son, Arthur Carpenter, was the informant. Attending physician was A. B.
Aldritch, M. D., of Houghton. Plowe Funeral Home of Houghton handled burial
arrangements. However, the info on the 1900 federal census lists the month and
year of birth, and it states July 1862. (Houghton county MI, Portage twp.,
Village of Houghton, 302 Jasper Street, SD 12, ED 192, sheet 25, LDS film

I would use the July 1862
date from the census because there is a good chance that Lucy was the person
talking to the census taker. In the case of the death certificate, Art
Carpenter was the informant, and we don't know what his source was. In any
event, unless a church baptismal record
is found we will never be 100% sure."

launch Captain. He was also an auto mechanic.
We have, framed, a picture
ca1915, of Cap in front of the Hancock City Fire Hall behind the wheel of the
first Ford car in the Copper Country, which he drove up from Detroit. Buddy
says he had heard that Cap was a bit
deformed as a hunchback.

MINING GAZETTE - TUESDAY -
December 17, 1940 - LAWRENCE CARPENTER, WELL KNOWN MARINE ENGINEER, PASSES
Laurence R. Carpenter, 51 years old, life long resident of Houghton and well known Great Lakes Marine Engineer, died suddenly at 8:30 yesterday morning while at work in the machine shop of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. Death was caused by a heart attack.
The deceased was born in
Houghton and lived here all his life
except when sailing. Starting a marine
career with his father, the late Cyril Carpenter who was chief engineer for
Joseph Croze who operated a fleet of
tugs in Portage Lake waters, the deceased spent 35 years sailing the Great Lakes and Southern Atlantic
waters. Early in his career he worked on tugs for Joseph Croze, the Nestor
Lumber Co., Pryor Dock and Dredging Co., and the Hebard Lumber Co. Later he was chief engineer on a
Michigan-Wisconsin ferry operating between Muskegon and Grand Haven, Michigan
and Milwaukee, Wis. In 1923 when Capt. Hope Clark brought the S.S. United
States to Houghton for the Houghton to Port Arthur run, Mr. Carpenter was his chief engineer
and he remained with the S.S. United States during the
seasons of 1924 and 1925 when the ship operated between Tampa, Florida and
Havana, Cuba. Returning to the Great Lakes he was engineer on the s. [?]
During the last few years of
his life he has served as chief engineer on the Madeline, Seminole, and City
of Hancock, all of which operated between Houghton and Isle Royale. He made his final boat trip last fall when
he took the City of Hancock to Cleveland where she was tied up for the
winter.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by
his mother, Mrs. Cyril Carpenter, three
brothers, William of Menominee, Arthur of Detroit, and Roy of Houghton; and
three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Abb, Houghton, Mrs. Richard Searight, Detroit, and
Mrs. Noble Ernest, Houghton.
*************
FS Note: According to Lawrence's tombstone in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton, MI, he died in 1910. However, his obituary mentions Dorothy Searight, wife of Richard Searight, as a surviving sister. As my mother was married in 1925, Lawrence obviously didn't pass away in 1910. In the Carpenter Mem. Files is the Probate Form, assigning Arthur Carpenter as administrator of his estate, dated January 1941. I might have copied the tomb stone incorrectly, so check again. 1940 is the most likely date. According to his obituary, Lawrence died suddenly while at work in the machine shop of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. However, Ma told me he had died on the college steps after walking there through the heavy snow.
**************
Lawrence went to the
Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton to learn how
to run engines in salt water. He
worked on the United States, a fresh water boat that was to be taken to
Key West to take (smuggle?) liquor
(rum?) in from Havana. The boat burned
after it arrived down there. Lawrence enjoyed going to downtown Houghton where they had a stock brokerage and sit and
watch as they moved different stock prices around on their board. Several
certificates, now worthless except as collectibles, remain.
**************
After his death his brother
Arthur Carpenter was appointed administrator
of his estate on 24 January
1941. The document is # 4055. Another document
is # 5044. Final disposition of Lawrence's estate is not given. Further
inquiries must be made of the Houghton
Probate Court. (The documents are in
the file.)

She said the Carpenter name was very familiar to her. She mentioned that

of my Mother when she went to Houghton
to visit and that Lawrence Carpenter came to Manitowoc on the liner USS America, which she said was the biggest ship to
traverse Lake Michigan at that time, He
took the trolley car from Manatowoc to Two Rivers and came to my parents home for a visit. He then took them
on a tour of the ship the following day.
My sister said that people were
wondering why they got to go aboard and
everyone else had to view the ship from the dock.... Connections help!

Delphius, if s/he actually
existed, would have died in
infancy. Ma knew the name, but wasn't
sure if s/he was a sibling of hers or of her father. There is no Houghton record of Delphius, and Cyrille did have a
brother named Dolphis.
xiii. ROSE CARPENTER, b. Abt. 1907, Houghton, Houghton, MI; d. Unknown.
FS Note: Entered on the spread sheet made by Ma and
me is the notation: Rose - Delphius
Carpenter - died in infancy. I'm unsure about
this reference to Delphius. I
doubt if it's a middle name because that's not the way I recorded middle
names. On another notation I made, both
Rose and Delphius were two different
children who died in infancy. According to Ma, who wasn't even close, Cyril
had two brothers and a sister, names
unknown, although one might have been
named Delphis who would have been a farmer, suggesting a male name. To
further complicate the confusion, Lucy had a niece named Rose.
The county of Houghton shows
the following children of Cyril died:
No name, female, child, 6/4/1891, no day, month, or year, scarlet fever,
Houghton / parents Cirile/Lucy.
Crel, male, 2/11/1894, 3
months, 2 days, unknown cause - parents Ceril/Addie Carpenter
The child who died in 1891
might have been either Rose or Delphius. Crel died in 1894. These two, added to
the nine known children, indicates there might have been 11 who had been born
to Cyrille and Lucy.

when their marriage license was taken out December 12, 1905. She is residing in

name is Mary Kruger. Her father was born in Canada and her mother was born in

occupation is listed as engineer. The marriage was performed by James M.
Kerridge, Methodist Minister. Witnesses were Mrs. J.H. Kerridge of Iron
Mountain and Mrs. E. Kerridge of Vulcan. This information was taken from the
license and marriage certificate #763, 1905, recorded in liber 3, page 313, 19
December 1905. They were married 16 December 1905 at Iron Mountain, MI. Sarah was Will's first wife
There is something of a
controversy as to whether Sarah was also known as Sadie. One piece, of a ten piece coffee set, is the
cream pitcher upon which is written Sadie Bruno-1904. Ma said it belonged to Will's first wife, but it might also have
been her mother or sister or a cousin.
Two pictures, identified by Ma as Sadie Bruno, ca1920 and ca1925, are in
the Carpenter Album. But Sarah died in
1915. The pictures were probably
incorrectly dated, but it is also possible that Sarah and Sadie Bruno are not the same person.

Mr. Abb was born in

ANTOINE (ANTHONY) (CARPENTIER)5, JOSEPH (CARPENTIER)4, CHARLES-MARIE (CARPENTIER)3, ETIENNE (CARPENTIER)2, NOEL (CARPENTIER)1) was born December 01, 1900 in Houghton, Houghton, MI,
and died June 12, 1964 in Houghton, Houghton,
MI. He married VIVIAN C. JONES July 29,
1949 in Toledo, Ohio, daughter of COLUMBUS JONES and ZODIA UNKNOWN. She was born
1926 in Kentucky, and died Bef. 1980.
Art was
French/Catholic/Protestant. He LOVED pork chops. He was a graduate of St. Ignatius School, then later graduated from Houghton High
School. The January 5/6, 1920 Federal Census, Houghton Village, Portage Twp.,
Sup. Dist. 11, E.D. 165, Sheet 5A, tells us he was 19 years of age, working as
a laborer in a Stave Mill, and lived at 167 Jasper Street. The 1930 Polk shows
he was a chauffeur living at 167 Jasper.
**********
Between 1936-1943 Art lived
at the Houghton Homestead, and also probably during many years before
1936. When he moved to Detroit from
Houghton in 1943, he lived with us at our 20014 Hull Street residence in
Detroit. He bought a gas station on the
corner of State Fair and John R Street that he operated. I
recall him coming home one day and telling about all the money he had
won at the racetrack that day. After he
left, my mother told me about all the money he had lost on previous days that
he seldom talked about. He probably did
do fairly well financially at the station and, being a bachelor at the time,
was probably able to afford his fondness for the ponies. I remember a birthday
present he gave me when I was about twelve: a set of toy cowboy revolvers with
a leather belt and holsters, which I'm sure were quite expense at that
time. I remember another occasion when
he took me to the Kresge store next to the Sears store in Highland Park and
bought me a Disney book and some metal toy soldiers. I'm sure they'd be collectors' items now.
In December of 1945 he
moved from Hull to live at a boarding house.
After his marriage in 1949 to Vivian he sold the station and opened a
restaurant on John R in Hazel Park, MI that he operated with Vivian. Following this, he came down with a
crippling ailment to his legs (possibly MS) and did odd janitorial jobs at
factories, including Michigan Spline Gage on Nine Mile Road. This led to his divorce, after which he
moved to Houghton, MI. He might have
lived for a short time at the Carpenter Homestead, 1203 Jasper Street, before
moving to a room above the cabstand at Bruno's Hotel on Sheldon Avenue. An envelope suggests that as early as
10/27/1956 he might have been living on Jasper, or perhaps that was just his
mailing address. He was living in Houghton when his sister Mable died in 1958.
One of the stories Ma told
about Art was the time he was at the movie theater when they were giving out
dishes or some other prize and it was necessary for him to go on the
stage. He couldn't understand why
everyone started laughing until later.
He had purchased a new suit that day which he was wearing but had
neglected to remove the price tag that was visible to everyone.
Art and Vivian were married
by the justice of the peace, H. McBird. The marriage was witnessed by Vena
Felts and William D. Felts. The license number was 180981, issued by the
Probate Court of Lucas County, Ohio. (in file) It took place on 29 July 1949.

He was born in Houghton
Dec. 1, 1900, and graduated from St. Ignatius School and attended Houghton High
School. Mr. Carpenter was employed by the Copper Range Railroad as an
electrician for several years and later for the Copper Motor Company. In 1945 [I still think it was 1943] he moved
to Detroit where he operated a service station until 1958 when he returned
home.
Surviving are the widow,
Vern, of Detroit, a daughter, Cathy of Detroit, a brother, Roy of Chassell and
a sister, Mrs. Richard Searight of Detroit and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call in the Plowe Funeral Home
after 7 p.m. today.

According to a letter
written by RFS, dated 6/23/64, Vivian's address was 40503 Dequindre, Troy, MI,
where Arthur sent a package to Kathy from the Houghton County Hospital. However, this was based upon a mail receipt
dated 5/11/64 to Kathy at that address.
A later delivery receipt, dated 5/12/64, which RFS might not have seen,
was signed by Laura Jones (no idea who this can be) and not by Vivian. She might have been deceased by this time or
perhaps not at home when delivery was made.
Eleven days after sending the package to Kathy, 6/12/64, Arthur was
deceased.
************
Vivian was
English/Protestant. She moved from Tennessee to Detroit where she became a
waitress. Contained in the Memorabilia Files is a copy of the 1980 obituary
notice of Columbus D. Jones, father of Vivian.
Vivian is not listed as a surviving relative. She was probably deceased
by 1980 and possibly a lot sooner. She
did have a sister named Vena who, with her husband William D. Felts, was a
witness at her wedding to Arthur Carpenter, so she can't be the Vena mentioned
as one of the surviving daughters of Columbus Jones. On her marriage
certificate to Art, her name is written as Vivian James. The clerk either make a mistake or this was
her second marriage.
Child of ARTHUR CARPENTER and VIVIAN JONES is:
i.MARGERY KATHRYN (KATHY)8 CARPENTER, b. May
23, 1953, Warren, MI; m. ARCHIE GRIFFIN; b. Abt. 1950,
in Warren, MI.
Kathy was born at Warren
Memorial Hospital. In the Carpenter
Memorabilia Files is the obituary notice for Columbus Jones, the grandfather of
Kathy. She is not listed as a surviving
grandchild, but is probably listed as the step-daughter known as Mrs. Archie
Griffin of Warren. It's possible that this southern clan listed its orphaned
grandchildren as step-children for some unknown reason.
25. DOROTHY HARRIET7 CARPENTER* (CYRILLE (CYRILE)6, ANTOINE (ANTHONY) (CARPENTIER)5, JOSEPH (CARPENTIER)4, CHARLES-MARIE (CARPENTIER)3, ETIENNE (CARPENTIER)2, NOEL (CARPENTIER)1) was born August 19, 1903 in Houghton, Houghton, MI, and died April 06, 1991 in Troy,
Oakland, MI. She married RICHARD FRANKLIN SEARIGHT* July
28, 1925 in Houghton, Houghton, MI, son
of BENJAMIN SEARIGHT* and FIDELIA ELLIS*. He was born
June 13, 1902 in Manistee, MI, and died August 19, 1975 in Copper Harbor, MI.
Dorothy was
French/Catholic/Protestant. On the 1920 Michigan Census, Houghton County,
Portage Township, Houghton Village, Sup. Dist 11, Ed 165, Sheet 5A, she’s
listed as being 16 years old, home address of 167 Jasper Street, Parents:Cyril
Carpenter and Lucy Allie.
Dorothy was born August 19,
1903 and raised in Houghton, Michigan.
She was the youngest of at least nine children and perhaps as many as
eleven [there was probably one named Crel and possibly another named Rose or
Delphius who died in infancy] born to Cyril [Cyrille] and Lucy [Lucie] Carpenter.
She lived in the Carpenter Homestead on 167 Jasper Street in Houghton.
As a child she had her own
bedroom in a "single house with three upstairs bedrooms" which she
shared with her favorite toy, a Teddy bear. It was a two-story house,
affectionately known as the Carpenter Homestead, with electric lights but no
fireplace, which was probably heated by wood or coal in an enormous stove off
to one side in the living room. Her nickname was "Babe" because she
was the youngest in the family of her parents and three sisters and four
brothers still living there. She liked
to roller skate and could ice skate a little.
There were no TV or radios to entertain her as a child, but she went on
many picnics to Eagle Harbor, Twin Lakes, Freda, Forest Hill Cemetery, etc. She probably didn't know her grandparents
at all or not very well, as she thought the name of her maternal grandfather,
George Allie, was Joseph Allie, and she also didn't know the name of her
maternal grandmother. She knew nothing
about her paternal Carpenter grandparents.
Dorothy attended J. A.
Hubbell School, three blocks from home, to which she walked during the summer
and the winter, even when the snow was piled high. On June 21, 1918 she
graduated from Houghton Grammar School.
She attended the Houghton High School
half a mile away to which she walked, again through the deep snow at
times. In school she excelled as a
student, being on the Honor Roll at least two times, enjoying business courses
the most and history classes the least.
On May 27, 1921 she was awarded a Primary Certificate Class C for
proficiency in Remington typewriting. On June 14, 1922 she graduated from
Houghton High School. On June 03, 1917
she was confirmed at the St. Ignatius Church in Houghton where, on June 13,
1917, she had her First Holy Communion. She took piano lessons, but I don't
recall ever seeing a piano in the Homestead or heard of one being there, so she
probably practiced next door at the Abb house where her sister Marie lived and
had a piano. As a youngster she was
afflicted with polio, a condition that remained with her throughout her
lifetime. She was raised as a Roman Catholic, but I doubt if she was ever
devoted to its cause as she, likely at the request of husband Richard,
converted to Protestantism sometime in the 1930s. By July 1925 she was employed
as a bookkeeper.

WEDNESDAY - JULY 29, 1925 -
DAILY MINING GAZETTE HOUGHTON - SOCIAL AND PERSONAL - CARPENTER-SEARIGHT
WEDDING CEREMONY PERFORMED YESTERDAY AT ST. IGNATIUS CHURCH
The marriage of Miss
Dorothy Carpenter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Carpenter, Jasper Street, to
Richard Franklin Searight [of Manistee, MI], was solemnized yesterday morning
[July 28th] at St. Ignatius Church, the Rev. Fr. Rezek officiating. The witnesses were [Miss?] Edna and Gilbert
Archambeau [of Chassell]. Flower girls
were Helen Earnest and Jessie Allie and the ring bearer was little Patricia
Carpenter. [The license, made out 7/27/1928 and signed by Nicholas F. Kaiser,
the Deputy County Clerk, and the certificate of marriage, signed by the clerk
Harriet I. Mitchell, Deputy, was received at the Clerk's Office of the County
of Houghton on July 30, 1925.] [Dorothy was 21 years old and a bookkeeper at
the time, and Richard was 23.]
Following the ceremony a
wedding breakfast was served and a reception tendered the bridal party at the
Carpenter home. Out of town guests were
Mr. and Mrs. Grover Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. William Carpenter of Menominee and
Arthur Carpenter of Detroit.
The bride is the daughter
of one of Houghton's pioneer families and for a considerable period was cashier
at the Woolworth Store. Mr. Searight
was formerly manager of the postal telegraph office in Houghton and is now
located in Detroit. Mr. and Mrs.
Searight left yesterday by motor for Detroit, where they will make their home.
************
So...she was married in the
morning and left for Detroit in the afternoon.
There's an inconsistency here, because I didn't think they settled in
Detroit until 1930, first in an
apartment and then in a rented house at 19946 Derby located in the first block
north of State Fair Road and one block west of John R. Perhaps they had just honeymooned in Detroit
and then returned to Houghton. In 1941
she moved with her family to 20014 Hull in Detroit where they lived until a
temporary move lasting a few months to Margie's Oak Park house at 8733
Kenberton, Oak Park, Oakland, MI, in 1960.
Dorothy began working as a
part time sales clerk at Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1943 and continued there
until 1945. One time when I was in the
store with her I went off on my own into the home department where I purchased
a carving set for her birthday. When I
next saw her, she spotted the package I carried and, mysteriously, told me she
didn't need a carving set. [Actually, she did have three sets and it was only
the silly notion of a ten year old to get her another.] So I returned it and
wondered how she knew what I had been up to.
She later told me that the department I had gone to used a distinctive
wrapping paper that allowed her to identify where it had come from and she had
guessed what it had been from its shape and size. But, could it also be that she had followed me and watched from a
distance my outlandish purchase?
In 1945 she began working
for the Detroit Public Schools as a cashier in their lunchrooms. She was at
several schools but the first one that I recall was Northern High School in
1948. In 1956 she transferred to Nolan
Intermediate [my former Intermediate School] where she worked until she retired
11/1/1969. She really enjoyed that job,
and especially delighted in catching the kids trying to steal food and then
telling me about it later. I, in turn,
always looked forward to the cuisine she might bring home for our
consumption. Spaghetti prepared at the
school was exceptionally delectable. After her years as a cashier she became a
secretary for husband Richard in his accounting office on State Fair, three
blocks south of 8 Mile Road and a couple of blocks east of John R in Detroit. She later worked as his secretary at his
home office in their Beverly Hills house on Buckingham.
For a while she and husband
Richard lived at 8733 Kenberton in Oak Park, MI with daughter Margie. In
1960-61 a more permanent move was made to their house at 15721 Buckingham in
Beverly Hills, Oakland, MI. There she lived until her move in January of 1988
to Frank's house at 4201 Washington Crescent in Troy, Oakland, MI. At age 87
she was hospitalized at the William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Oakland,
Michigan due to acute renal failure, osteoarthritis. She passed away April 8,
1991, at 12:53 pm, from cardiac arrhythmia. On April 10, 1991 she was interred
at Acacia Park Cemetery, Birmingham, MI.

Dorothy enjoyed traveling
in the car, even though she sat in the back seat most of the time, and attended
all the family vacations, which generally included an annual excursion to the
Copper Country and another summer trip to some place in the United States or
Canada. One of the family trips was to
Quebec City in July of 1952 and another was to California/Colorado in 1957,
which Frank had to miss. Other
vacations she greatly enjoyed were her trip to Hawaii in October of 1977 with
Marcella Massie, her May 1979 trip to Mexico with Marge and Marcella, and a
trip to Holland, MI in 1985 with Marge and Margaret Hydorn for the Tulip
Festival.
She loved to fish and was
able to bait her own hook and fish from the shore, but wouldn't get into a
boat. She also loved to garden and cook and sing. Her hair was done weekly by
Nora at the Fashion House Beauty Salon, 4113 West 13 Mile Road. She used a
Hudson charge account for many years.
She learned to drive a car in the cemetery at Houghton, but didn't navigate very often, and never alone. Even sitting on a high cushion, she couldn't see the road that well. Her last license, number S 623 149 298 648, expired in 1988, but by that time she hadn't driven for many years, always being transported about by Marge or Frank. She voted Republican. She attended the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Detroit for many years, whose monthly newsletter still comes addressed to her in Troy even in 2003. Her Social Security number was 380-20-7939.

he had purchased a new boat that he carried on the top of his car. It amazed me how he could put it up and move
it down and then into the water---all by himself! Noble died 8/22/1972 (even

Buddy: We lived in
Charlestown, MA until 1960, then bought a new home in Revere, MA. [As of 1963
Buddy was living with his family at 79 Gore Road, Revere, Mass.] In 1967 we
rented our home while we accepted an overseas assignment for the Navy Dept. in
Rota, Spain. After three years we returned to our home in Revere, MA. We remained there for two years then
returned to Rota, Spain for five years. In August of 1977 We were sent to an
Army base, Seneca Army Depot, in Romulus, N.Y. Due to budget cuts, in 1979 I
was offered 'early retirement' which I accepted. Because of the severe winters
in Geneva, NY where we lived we decided to move south where it was warmer.
Our first stop was Starke
and Gainesville, Fl. In January of 1980
I was employed by the University of Florida. This job lasted until September
1980 when we moved to Cape Canaveral, Fl and I began work at the Cape Canaveral
Air station for Pan Am World Services and then for Johnson Control World
Services. At age 65, in April of 1994, I retired from work for a second time.

a church wedding, there had to be a civil ceremony first so that a marriage
certificate could be obtained. This took place in the city hall of Naples and
was performed by an aide to the Mayor of Naples. The Church wedding took place
on September 9, 1952 in the Church of Santa Maria Della Catena. The church was
located on the street named Santa Lucia which is noted in an Italian song of
that name, in Naples, Italy. The Rev. Father McGuiness, Chaplain, US Navy,
conducted the ceremony. The best man was John Long, USN, friend of the groom,
and the bridesmaid was Lucy D'Alessandro, sister of the bride. A reception was

12/2003: Frank was born
August 5, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in the Motor City where he
blundered about in high school, played pinochle through college, and eventually
graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Business Administration
and later with a Masters Degree in Education. He spent thirty-five years as a
teacher pushing chalk and instructing the children in the elementary schools of
the Lamphere School District of Madison Heights, Michigan, a nearby suburb of
Detroit. He lives in Troy, Michigan, another close suburb, with his wife
Christine, their youngest daughter
Susan, and a
brain-challenged beagle named Trudy. Frank is the father of six children, the
eldest two being thirty-four and the
youngest fourteen, with three others spaced between.
Frank enjoys chatting with
his wife, visiting with his children, relating with his grandsons Sean and Luke
and Andrew, and advancing his knowledge of family genealogy by squandering
precious hours at the computer with his Family Tree Maker program. Currently,
he is writing a series of fictional and poetical works that are detailed
elsewhere in this account. He served as a part-time volunteer at the Hill
School Library in Troy while daughter Susan was advancing her education, and
assisted her teachers once a week with computer classes. Currently he is
teaching/monitoring the computer room at the Troy Community Center as a
volunteer. An avid follower of the stock market, Frank makes no recommendations
other than to advise people to buy the best and hang on for the roller coaster
ride the market takes.
In his idle moments (ha!
ha!) he contributes to favored sites on the web that honor and promote the
creative genius of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, one of his favorite authors.

interest, and acquaint yourselves with the imaginative efforts of his countless
followers. While not especially religious, Frank is deeply spiritual and
credits the All Mighty with any contributions he has made to the literary
world.
Frank is a keen enthusiast
of Michigan. Having visited most of the states, he is firmly convinced that
few, if any, offer such a variety of scenic and historic attractions as does
the Water Wonderland. His favorite towns are Houghton, located in the
northwestern part of the Upper Peninsula, and Copper Harbor, forty miles
further north at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, the northern most point of
Michigan. The wild and craggy shoreline of Lake Superior, the gorgeous and
aromatic pine and hard-wood forests, the scenic mountain ridges, blend with the
fascinating history of the area's bygone copper mining days. There is much to
see and do, lots of pasties to eat, and many delightful restaurants to
experience. Frank and his family can be found up there annually in July or
August relaxing and regenerating there spiritual batteries for another year.

Sandy: October 2003:
Married in 1981. Our 22nd
anniversary this year is pretty significant considering the high rate of
divorce these days. I have a strong commitment and belief in marriage and
family. Husband Steve is big influence
in my life. Children, Cheryl and Dan, are the reason I am here - taking care of them in God's behalf, working
hard to give them morals and values, sense of family, self respect and
importance, acquire an education to become independent and carry on whatever
their roles may be in life here on
Earth. We also have a Golden Retriever, Cheyenne, who is a very important part
of the family. She’s there whenever you need her, loves to go for walks and
being chased.
Moved back from California
in 1988 to be with extended family - have children grow up and know their
Grandparents, cousins, aunts & uncles - learn where they came from. Support our parents as they grow older as
they provided so much for us. 20 year anniversary this year working for
IBM. The last 3 years have been able to
work from home, which enables me to not only earn money, but also be here for
the kids. It's the best of both worlds.
I'm a former Girl Scout Troop Leader.
Previously was a team
leader for customer support - working with the sales team on ordering
equipment, collecting accts receivable, etc.
Currently am in a position called Sales Operations Support - providing
information to the sales team that works with our Business partners - involves
pulling data, creating reports in spreadsheet format.
Volunteer at the Humane
Society 2 years - brings me sense of feeling needed - mainly walk dogs, hold
cats, socialize animals by playing with them.
Very rewarding, yet very hard
emotionally to leave at the end of the day with so many pets needing good
homes. Angry that people can be so
cruel and thoughtless. Animals show so
much unconditional love towards people.
Would love to be able to do more for them. I love to work in the garden
- planting bulbs, perennials, annuals,
vegetables - watching them come up and grow, creating a place for butterflies,
birds to come. I also like to take
walks, usually with Cheyenne, to get exercise and have time to think and look
at other peoples gardens and flowers.
Sandy
has intense religious convictions and is a member of the Kensington Community
Church in Troy, MI. She strongly believes in Biblical and family values and,
along with husband Steve, is raising her children to feel and behave in the
same way. She’s an enthusiast supporter of President Bush, thankful for the things
he has done to promote the welfare of the nation and protect its citizens from
harm, and she admires him for being unafraid to stand up for his beliefs.
Children of STEVEN LAGRECA and SANDRA BEAUBIEN are:
i. CHERYL RENEE10 LAGRECA, b.
February 02, 1985, San Diego, CA.
Cheryl - October 2003: In
elementary school I was in the Girl
Scouts for a while; mom was our leader, and dad taught us a computer patch. We had some interesting characters in our
troop. That was the time I got a toothpick stuck in my leg and had to go to the
hospital for its removal. I used to love playing on the monkey bars during
recess, and I remember watching a lot of Sesame Street. Every summer I had to
go to Care Company, so I'd do something 'constructive with my summer.'
In middle school I had braces, and I gave mom the hardest time about
going to the orthodontist. We went on
some pretty cool family vacations; that was the California/Alaska year. I
danced and played soccer throughout
this time. One of my coaches called me the “energizer bunny” because I always
played midfield. That's also the time I was so grossed-out by dissecting a
cow's heart that I became a vegetarian. I earned the black patch in my ski program.
I worked at Kensington Church with mom in the babies and infant area, and two weeks at Kroger before I quit. I did
some babysitting then as well.
In my high school years I
participated in competitive dance, which was a lot of fun. I took ballet, jazz,
hip hop, acro and character classes. I also played soccer on the freshman team,
went down hill skiing, and tried snowboarding (so painful). Even though I
complained about Troy High all the time, I went to all the dances and football
games, although I rarely watched the games. High school is where I made my
close friends and met my boyfriend. This is also when I began to care about
health and going to the gym. I had a lot of jobs in high school as well. The
main ones were California Closets, 5.7.9, and Rio Bravo
Currently, I share a
dorm with my high school best friend at Western (Michigan) where
I'm majoring in fashion merchandising. I would like to be one of the
fashion consultants on TLC's show What Not To Wear. I take a weekly hip hop class here so I can
still get in my dancing, and I've also attended some kick boxing classes.
ii. DANIEL RYAN LAGRECA, b. June 16, 1987, San Diego, CA.
Dan: - October 2003: Since the first grade, I've been in the Boy
Scouts. In elementary school I built 5 different Pinewood Derby cars for Cub Scouts. Also in
elementary school, I joined a soccer team and played soccer until middle
school. Middle school made some major transitions, from only one class to 6 classes a day, no more soccer, and moving from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. Through middle school I started
taking classes in subjects that I was interested in. In the seventh grade I took applied technology, a class
that confirmed my liking for engineering and also affected my
hobbies/interests. In the 8th grade I got into radio control car
racing, bought my first dirt bike and started mowing lawns to pay for this purchase. In the 9th grade I joined the engineering club and participated
in a competition called US F.I.R.S.T.
We built a robot to compete on a field of obstacles against other radio
controlled robots. Each team had a
corporate sponsor, (ours was GM) so the
budgets were huge. Around this time, my family ordered a dune buggy kit from
Australia called a sidewinder, and we’ve been working on it continuously. It is
almost finished, just needs paint. At the end of the 9th grade, I made my first "big" investment
in the stock market. I put some money into a liberty mutual fund. So far, I'm
happy with its performance. That summer, our troop went on our first high
adventure camp, Sea Base, an amazing trip where we sailed a 70-foot boat to Key
West and back. We snorkeled usually four or five times a day. Our motto was to
"wake up late, take it easy, and then taper off". In the 10th grade I
sold my first dirt bike and bought a bigger one, a Yamaha TTT-125L. Over that
winter, my dad and I installed street
kits on the dirt bikes so that when I got my drivers license, and then a
motorcycle endorsement, I could drive
on the dirt roads up north. The summer of 10th grade, our Boy Scout troop went
to northern tier. This was a five-day canoeing trip through the boundary waters
of Canada / Minnesota. There were amazing sunsets and we learned how to sail a
canoe. During the summer of 2003, a lot
happened. I went to Philmont, another high adventure camp, with the Boy
scouts. We hiked 80 miles through majestic mountains, beautiful valleys and
camped by some babbling brooks. It was a great chance to get closer to God
and nature. When I returned, I got my
drivers license and initiated an all out search for a car. Ended up convincing
my parents to replace our old van with a cool 1987 Fiero GT. We got one that
was in excellent mechanical condition, but needed work on the aesthetics. Now I
am in the 11th grade taking engineering drawing, and taking a class to pass the
A+ exam (industry standard computer technician certification). Someday I hope
to be some kind of automotive engineer and have a small house on lots of
property for the dirt bikes and dune buggy.
