Swim call! Swim call was usually called on our way to Westpac, right in the middle of the pacific. Sharp shooters were stationed to take care of any sharks. I never saw one the whole 4 years I was aboard!. Many would dive from the 01 level & some even higher.
The think to watch out for was getting under the ship when she'd roll.
In Hong Kong. We were SOPA Admin twice there. This meant spending two weeks in port. The ship provided the shore patrol. The volunteers stayed at the Hilton. Tough duty. Besides the Hilton, another popular sport was Jimmies Kitchen. At Jimmies you could dine on Kobe steak, Blue Nun wine, topped off with baked Alaska. A change from our usual cuisine.
Our Ship was popular with the PBR crews. We had Ice Cream. They would barter with free rides for officers and crew alike. I passed. Remember Apocalypse Now?
I do admire the brave men who crewed these boats.
