Cotton Patch Socialism
As far as I
know, George
Boone
was the first person to discover, back
in the early
1950's,
what
later came to be called Cotton Patch Socialism.
SHORT BIO: George Boone is a native American who acquired his last name from some hapless paleface named Daniel who got captured by the Shawnees in the late 1700's, - around the time of the American Revolution. On a more positive note, Daniel Boone was a major player in a gigantic real estate development project called Kentucky. While it was very large, apparently it wasn't very profitable, or at least George's family is quick to note that their branch of the Boone family didn't inherit anything. At the time George discovered CPS, he was about 14 years old, and he was helping his grandfather on their west Tennessee cotton farm. He often accompanied both his Grandfather and their mule when some plowing needed to be done. On the day that CPS was discovered, George's Grandfather was muttering about the price that the cotton Gin was charging, and how it was impossible to make a living from what remained after the cotton was sold. A cotton gin is a device that removes the seeds from cotton. Cotton needs to be ginned before it can be processed into cotton fiber. George listened for awhile to Pappy, which is what he called his Grandfather, and then spoke up. "Pappy, since I know that this town has two cotton gins, my suggestion would be to take your cotton to the other gin." "Well son", Pappy said, "that would be a very good suggestion, unless you happen to know anything at all. If you knew anything at all you would know that the same man owns both cotton gins!" George spent a piece of time or two thinking about this newly acquired information. Finally he replied, "Pappy you know what I think?" Pappy replied, "No son, what do you think?" George replied, "I think that the farmers should own the cotton gins!" Author: Jack Stewart With
