Cyclo-Cross

Cyclo-cross has become a regular autumn and winter activity for a growing number of members. This interest in cross has not been without some degree of success - take a look at the Recent Years History. But first, lets see how this season is progressing. The table below lists events versus club members performances as soon as they are published. Latest event at the top:

Recent Years History

In the 2000/2001 season, Phil Hughes rode, slid and bunny hopped his way to top of the West Midlands Cyclo-cross League. It was Phil's results, plus those of the other members riding, that earned the Velo 3rd place in the team clasification behind Bromsgrove Olympic and Wolverhampton Wheelers.

After a great season riding his mountain bike for the Scott UK Scholarship in the summer, Phil defected to Scott for the following cross season.

All was not lost though, waiting in the wings was Steven Roach. Fresh from his first year racing as a junior on the road, where he amassed a ridiculous number of points, Steven struck gold in cyclo-cross's Junior National Trophy 2001-2002, claiming the title with four wins from the five event series.

Following on from his success in the National Trophy, Steven was also crowned National Junior Champion after his victory in the Championships at Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich.

Unfortunately Steven also then moved on with the lure of free gear, sponsorship and new opportunities: time to recall Phil. For the 2002-2003 season, the club fielded a strong team of veterans but also Phil Hughes back in Velo colours leading our seniors. In the West Midlands League Phil finished second for the Series Overall, with Dave Garrett 3rd Vet and Gary Hipwell 4th Vet. Phil Roach also did us proud becoming the Veteran Champion of Wales.

Back in Velo colours, Steven Roach takes National Trophy Series 2003/2004 in thrilling climax to the elite race at Abergavenny. Trailing 7 times winner Barrie Clarke by 2 points going into the race Steven had to beat Clarke to clinch the overall title. Steven threw down the gauntlet by attacking with Ronny Poelvorde and Nick Craig half way through the event. Clarke showed he wasn't going to give up the title easily and dragged a group of riders back up to Roach. As they started the last lap Clarke put in a big attack and gained a gap on Steven. However Steven dug deep and caught Clarke just before the finish. Entering the finishing straight it was both riders side by side with Steven getting the verdict on the line to take 3rd on the day but winning not just the U23 overall title but the Elite category overall title as well. At just 19 yrs of age Steven must surely be one of, if not, the youngest winner of this prestigious title. Supporting Steven 's exploits in Rugby Velo colours was Pete Mooney who took runner up in the over 50's category. What a day for the Rugby Velo!
