About the author . . . Alvin F. Oickle, a native of New England, lives in Florida. During his long career as a writer, he has served as a daily newspaper reporter and editor and as an Associated Press feature writer. He is working now on the biography of a Medal of Honor recipient whose life followed the stereotype for a 19th century sailor -- tattoos, drinking, and thirty years sailing around the world. From that has come a second nonfiction work, the story of a Spanish-American War battle in which all fifty-three survivors received the Congressional Medal of Honor -- a battle hidden in history. For a quarter century Alvin Oickle has taught writing as a faculty member and student publications advisor at the University of Massachusetts, the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY-Stony Brook), and Greenfield (MA) Community College. |
